that the kids play with 3 times, then either break or get bored with and throw all over the living room creating a giant junk pile. They have about as much fun playing with the cardboard box the Chinese plastic junk came in.

There's only so much stuff to put all this shit that the kids play with a handful of times, if that. My kids have gotten gifts that have taken me longer to put together than they have played with it. And it makes for awkward conversations when you have to ask them not to buy pointless shit for the kids, and they get offended.

You can both appreciate the grandparents’ love for their grandchildren while privately feeling frustrated at how they sometimes choose to express that.

it kind of is self-centered, because they don't care whether the kids play with them or not...it's all about the boomer mentality of buying GC crap to make yourself feel better about yourself. OMG i bought Tommy the latest PawPatrol ® Deluxe Lookout Tower with an MSRP of $169.99! Wow I am such an awesome grandparent! So much more awesome than the grandparents who only buy them the basic $49.99 model!

I have this exact thing in the playroom and it's a massive eyesore that never gets used.

By contrast my son got a $19 tin of dinosaur toys that gets used nearly every day.

The Jurassic World dinosaur toys have been a big hit, see

https://shop.mattel.com/shop/en-us/ms/%E2%80%8B%E2%80%8Bjurassic-world-sound-strike-pteranodon-gjn68

As one example. We have several. You can download an app on your phone and scan them too which my son loves. obviously it also makes him addicted to GC because now he wants the entire collection so he can scan them into the phone but we try to manage that aspect of it.

I personally like the figures that are less 'toy' and more collection. Wild Safari makes a lot of figures, and they have a dinosaur collection called the Carnegie Collection that I really like. Some of these can be difficult to find but I've had luck with this website:

http://www.dejankins.com/wildsafari

Schleich is another popular brand:

http://www.dejankins.com/schleichnewer

Of course, I splurge on these because my son lives and breathes dinosaurs. If your kid is not at that level, there are plenty of toys more along the lines of the "3 Bees & Me" tin I linked above.

We also have fossil toys like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Smithsonian-Dinosaurs-Skeleton-Educational-Archeological/dp/B00200JX3S

Where the idea is that you can bury the "fossil" in a sandbox or some dirt/mulch and the kid can search for it and dig it up. There are tons of toys along these lines. They also sell more serious ones that are actual fossils but may not necessarily be dinosaur fossils.

As for books, I recommend:

https://www.amazon.com/Dinosaur-Z-Dustin-Growick/dp/1465463143

https://www.amazon.com/National-Geographic-Little-First-Dinosaurs/dp/1426308469

and a Dr. Seuss one:

Oh Say Can You Say Di-no-saur?: All About Dinosaurs (Cat in the Hat's Learning Library)

And then for videos, check out Dinosaur Train (we get it through Amazon Prime I think). On YouTube there's a video called Dinosaur Train A-to-Z that is 80 minutes long. My son also likes Dino Dana (but not Dino Dan for some reason).

it falls in the category of champagne problems, sure, but you can at least see op’s point that conditioning your kids from birth to believe CONSOOM is the proper way to express and acknowledge love is not ideal.

Gee, I wonder why your parents don’t know how to shop for your kids. Could it have any linkage to your decision to move hours away from them to a place where you have no ties and can better serve GC? Or your inability to have a normal conversation with them about what your kids like? Just keeping fuming on the internet, it will eventually solve your problems.

i have seen this phenomenon many times and can’t discern any correlation with non-local grandparents or drive-by grandparents who drop off a gift and boom on over to lake havasu. it’s just an expression of an incredibly powerful desire to consume, one which i can appreciate op not wanting to pass along to his kids.

Kids sucking on plastic is one of the primary causes of the drop in men's testosterone levels. Ingested plastic releases phthalates which convert to estrogen in the body, which disrupts testosterone production
