You're a kid dood, in what way could you have felt any effect of the current economic downturn by age 19, other than probably hearing your parents talk about it?

the soviets helped discipline our thinking. notice how reagan pulled our soldiers out of lebanon after the beirut bombings in '83, rather than get mad as fuck and double down?

that was partly because we had more important things to do (ie, engage in a delicate geopolitical dance with the USSR) than to waste time doing the equivalent of neighborhood bike patrols in some levantine shithole.

you should read the article "Soviets in Space" from the october 1986 National Geographic.

having the USSR around was part of our identity. it motivated us in ways that the chinese never have.

how old were you in the 80s? I distinctly remember how scary nuclear war was. I was 8 (1985) when I was old enough to figure it out and it scared the crap out of me. I went into my folks backyard to try and start digging a bomb shelter until my dad told me "don't worry, we're close enough in that we'll get vaporized in the photo flash" / they used to test the air raid siren in my suburb twice a year, still remember that sound

tons of consumer debt, huge housing bubble, people thinking shit like pets.com was going to fly, politics became egregiously dumb with the purging of both parties of any politically incorrect people. not all that great in the adult world if you ask me.

but it was fucking awesome being a kid playing nintendo with bros, watching jurassic park/independence day/men in black, and reading some animorphs.

Not sure about that - in fact, i think the Internet has only enhanced the effect with social media blame game / making shit viral.

Sure, the Internet has also made forums like this possible where the anonymous can gather - but look at us, we're all pathetic, powerless, and afraid of being outed.

This.

The 90s may have been a time where shithead boomers got fat and happy on bullshit investments, but it was also the point at which the rot had clearly set in. The 90s/2000s were definitely more similar to the 20s or the 70s in terms of economic bubble blowing and general consumer stupidity - and does anyone think those were the 'peak' of anything? The 90s were also defined by the most vapid and inconsequential of presidents - Bill Clinton - who was the perfect douche for boomers to adore.

For me, the peak was either the 1950s or the late 60s - ending with the moon landing. That was truly the climax of the Cold War and our high point as a nation. Shit has been rolling downhill hard ever since.

no. the rot had already set in. the height was in the 50s-60s.

people overstate the significance of the Cold War. USSR was never a real threat.

even Reagan -- retrospectively hailed as the ultimate "Cold Warrior" titan who toppled the the "Evil Empire" -- had this to say during the peak of "hostilities":

"If they want to keep their Mickey Mouse system, that's OK."'

IOW, the Soviets had their little sphere of influence, and the Western powers just regarded them as backwards Easterners. the threat of the Communists attempting to overrun Europe or start a nuclear war was non-existent -- about as likely as it is today.
