It's not like the US gets all 90% of the Iranian oil if they take it. The oil still has to be piped over from the mainland. If the US wanted to end Iranian oil they could do it at any time without firing a single shot or destroying Iranian infrastructure. The US would only have to announce an embargo and any ship in violation will be confiscated. So there are much easier and less costly means of removing oil revenue from Iran. The US has chosen not to do this.
Similarly, the focus on the straight is also more symbolic. Over half of the ships Iran attacked were miles away from the straight in the red sea. Iran doesn't need to control the straight to disrupt oil shipping. They can easily hit ships at sea from much further away. It would only take a couple for shipping lines to halt movement. The US could also announce that they are closing the straight - again, embargo and confiscate any ship that makes passage.

V-22s are a possibility but they only carry 24 Marines so they’d have to make several trips and would be vulnerable to anti aircraft fire. They export 90% of their oil from there because Iran’s coast is too shallow to port large tankers. So they pump all the oil through underwater pipes 20 miles out to the island which has natural deep water ports that can handle large tankers. It’s also topographically downhill from the mainland so they don’t even have to use pumps since gravity does most of the work. If the US takes control of it, Iran’s entire economy would crumble within months. That alone won’t reopen Hormuz (the only way it reopens is if Iran agrees to stop shooting at ships) but it may give the US leverage to get Iran to agree to stop threatening to shoot at ships. The US can control Iran oil exports from the Gulf of oman. No need to ever set foot on the island. And it's not like if the US takes the island we get all the oil. Iran would simply turn it off.
The channel islands could be different. I could see taking them by force and solving the territory disputes. Iran could get really fucked by this war.
Nobody talks about it but Iran and China just completed an overland rail route connecting the two countries. It's gone now . |
