Employers: Entry-Level Applicants Are Just About Useless

Written by: Brian O'Connell 06/18/13 - 9:00 AM EDT

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- At perhaps a bad time in U.S. employment, it seems there's a "perception gap" between what workers think they're worth on the job and how employers see them.

Analysis by Bryant & Stratton College with help from Wakefield Research from a survey among U.S. adults age 18 to 34 found that 80% of workers believe they are "job ready and possess all the skills, experience and education needed to advance in their desired career path or obtain their next job."

Yet 40% of U.S. employers say most entry-level job candidates lack even the basic skills needed to fill job openings.

Then there's the issue of so-called "soft" job skills such as critical thinking and sophisticated problem-solving. Only 16% of the 18- to 34-year-olds surveyed see such skills as necessary for career advancement.

But that's a huge swing-and-miss by employees, the college says. In fact, 93% of U.S. employers say soft skills are "weighed more heavily" when vetting job candidates -- much more so than a candidate's college academic credentials.

"Being employable today is all about knowing how to communicate to employers that you have intelligence quotient as well as educational quotient," says Scott Traylor, associate campus director for online education at the online college.

Bryant & Stratton offers a video called Job Ready Or Not? explaining what employers look for in job candidates these days. Find it at here.

"Job-seekers need to start marketing themselves based on the skills, competencies and traits employers need and value most," says Beth Tarquino, chief academic officer at Bryant & Stratton. "Too often the background experience and soft-skills attributes needed to successfully look for a job are underestimated, especially by college students and new graduates. Searching for a job can become a full-time job, but putting in the extra work to understand hiring trends and needs of employers is worth it."

They need to tell themselves that they hire based on 'soft skills', because they cannot bring themselves to admit that they get 500 equally well qualified applicants for each position and hence are fucking 499 of those applicants.

Hr also has to justify their choices as the product of a RIGOROUS analysis of skills and suitability or they'd lose their own job.

First, they used to train noobs.

Second, they are bitching about an poor "critical thinking" when by not wanting to train anyone on the job they made history/phil/law degrees worthless.

Third, the reason your garden variety STEM dude doesn't have any "critical thinking skills" is because all they do is memorize solutions. So you got one group of people with no hard skills, and another group with no soft skills. Neither group being given the opportunity to train in what they lack. GJ America!

philosophy scores top 3-5 on gre, lsat etc. only behind math and physics which isn't the "garden variety stem" dude. You have failed at critical reasoning already. That's the appalling thing about STEM turds, you are below even business people in terms of reasoning - because at least they master lying. Interacting socratically with a stem dude is like playing checkers with someone who has downs syndrome. I have sat in organic chemistry and biochemistry with chem.E dudes. they are often the dimmest bulbs in the group. At least biology people have verbal fluidity.

Other than maybe biology and other bullshitty soft sciences, STEM is pure application. There is a reason engineers do well on the LSAT despite doing virtually no significant reading.

since the only people getting jobs are "engineers" a critical thinking situation would happen in everyday interactions.

1. What is the intelligence quotient?

2. What is the educational quotient?

3. You mean the two are different?

4. Why is this coming from an online college?

5. How the fuck did this guy get employed?
