i think i have it. used my parents bp monitors. they both have lika 100/70. but me no:( yesterday i got somethng like 126/80. then measured it later that night and even got to 130. and today the same thing. just now measured it after sitting on a chair and moving around and feet werent entirely on the ground and i got pulse 59 and 130/76 and measured my other arm a minute later after putting feet flat on the ground and leaning forward in the chair and got pulse 45 and 123/76. so even when i am so calm it is pushing 130/80:((

i was reading an old news clipping from 1984 about the release of Walter Mondale's medical records, and his blood pressure was like 150/90, and they didn't even make note of it. he was already 60 by then.

OP, get a grip. (Med student here.)

You're freaking out about 120s/70s BP? Calm the fuck down. These are numbers that MOST healthy (read: non-hypertensive) people run on a daily basis. Your BP is most likely fine and it's only if you run over 140/90 for a *sustained* period of time that you have real problems. Not all doctors are in agreement that 130/80 bps are even 'high', never mind 'treatable'.

Meanwhile, if you're still convinced you need to lower it -

1) Lose weight (how much do you weigh, anyway?)

2) Exercise

3) Eat a diet with less sodium and more potassium (i.e., the "DISH" diet)

most drs are not great examples of health. lots of stupid fat fucks who were never athletic enough to pla high school sports or smart enough to pwn physics or math. if u didnt notice ive been hitting 130/80. it's 120/75+ only when i am so calm that my pulse is 45. i know 130/80 does not in itself significatly pose a risk of kidney failure or stroke. but u're just one step away from 140. most people that have 120/70 into their 60s will still shoot into 140+ when they are 60+.

and whats worse i am not fat. i do exercise. maybe not much lately. but i am in the top10% in my med school class in terms of vo2max or bodyfat%. and i am close to this "dash" diet. i cannot drink any alcohol any more.

i dont think so. high blood pressure is due to increased systemic resistance. viagra=nitrates has a side effect of giving you hypotension. btw that might be another reason to marry a russian/ukrainian girl. she'll cook me borsch and thats like the only food that has nitrates naturally.

btw in my ethics class we discussed whether it's a good idea to give kidneys to the younger people or to the older people. and it's a fact that most younger transplants are type1 diabetics or autoimmune. as such most of them will damage the new kidney in 1-5yrs. but an older patient with hypertension might be completely cured if he gets a new kidney.

A lot of younger people who need kidneys have ADPKD (autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease), a genetic disorder where sufferers develop a multitude of kidney cysts until their kidneys are finally destroyed. These people will experience a long-term improvement in their health with a kidney transplant and won't ruin the transplanted kidney (it's not an autoimmune disease, it's a defect in various genes that code for structural proteins), thus it's worth doing for them.

I agree that the younger diabetics and glomerulonephritis type pts would probably redamage any new kidney so quickly that it wouldn't be worth it...

i dont have the literature for this but i think autoimmune and diabetes are like 80% causes of kidney failure. whereas blood pressure is more likely to give u stroke. and more people die of stroke than of kidney disease. and many more get stroke and then become criples instead of dying. either way if u're not defective from birth u shouldnt need any meds until u're 70:(

Blood pressure (BP) categories defined by systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) are commonly used. However, the BP category-specific risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) has not been thoroughly investigated in different age groups. The aim of this study was to assess long-term CVD risk and its impact according to BP categories and age group. Pooling individual data from 10 cohorts, we studied 67 309 Japanese individuals (40-89 years old) who were free of CVD at baseline: we categorized them as belonging to three age groups: 'middle-aged' (40-64 years), 'elderly' (65-74 years) and 'very elderly' (75-89 years). BP was classified according to the 2009 Japanese Society of Hypertension Guidelines. Cox models were used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios for CVD deaths. We observed 1944 CVD deaths over a mean follow-up of 10.2 years. In all age groups, the overall relationship between BP category and CVD risk was positive, with a greater strength observed for younger age groups. We observed a trend of increased risk from SBP/DBPôF130/85 mm Hg in the very elderly, and a significant increase from SBP/DBPôF120/80 mm Hg in the other age groups. The population attributable fractions (PAFs) of CVD death in reference to the SBP/DBP<120/80 mm Hg category ranged from 23.4% in the very elderly to 60.3% in the middle-aged. We found an overall graded increase in CVD risk with higher BP category in the very elderly.

PURPOSE:

Aerobic exercise is recommended as way to prevent hypertension. However, about 25% of the individuals receive minimal anti-hypertensive benefits associated with chronic exercise training. Thus, we attempt to identify those "non-responders" to chronic exercise based on their blood pressure (BP) responses to acute exercise (single-session). Our primary objective is to correlate the magnitude of BP decrease following acute exercise to the magnitude of BP reduction after chronic exercise. Our secondary objective was to examine the correlates of BP reduction after acute and chronic exercise.

METHODS:

17 prehypertensive (120 to 139/80 to 89mmHg) males and females (45-60 years old) underwent acute exercise assessments before an 8-week walking/jogging program (4 times per week, 30 minutes per session, 65% maximum oxygen consumption). Blood pressure, hemodynamics, heart rate variability (HRV), and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) were assessed before and after acute exercise and chronic training.

RESULTS:

BP was significantly reduced -7.2±1.2/-4.2±1.0 mmHg and -7.0±1.4/-5.2±1.2 mmHg relative to baseline following acute (30 minutes at 65% maximum oxygen consumption) and chronic exercise, respectively (p<0.01). The magnitude of change in systolic blood pressure (SBP) after acute exercise was strongly correlated with change in resting SBP following chronic training, r=0.89, p<0.01. A similar correlation was observed with diastolic BP, r=0.75, p<0.01. After acute exercise, significant reductions in Total Power (ms) and BRS were observed in both sexes (p<0.01). However, following chronic exercise, only men demonstrated a significant reduction in the low frequency to high frequency ratio (-36%), p<0.01.

CONCLUSION:

The magnitude of the acute BP lowering effect exercise may predict the extent of BP lowering following chronic training interventions in pre-hypertensives.

I was hitting 130 for awhile. Last time, without drugs, I hit 114.
