GRE is irrelevant for top stem PhDs. Everyone is at the top of the range and test doesn’t have enough power to distinguish within the top group. It’s all about research and connections with professors in the field (which does require IQ but also other factors).

Read Thinking Fast and Slow. Two different skills, can correlate with IQ overall, but it’s very common for people who have elite genetics for fast thinking to do well at it and ride that success to preftigious outcomes, and then struggle when they shift into a phase of life where slow thinking is more valued/valuable.

If you think high IQ people who think fast are good at creative thinking to slowly solve complex problems, you have spent very little time in BigLaw and BigCorp. So, so much time spent impulsively reacting and thinking one step ahead. Almost no strategy. Strategy is really hard even for smart people if they’ve been trained to react quickly and aggressively and try to accumulate small wins and prove that they’re on top of the immediate crisis and battling direct competition. Also stress destroys strategic thinking and we’ve created a mode of living and working with constant stress.

I second the poaster above. Everyone here knows that retards are all around - even on this elite board, and when you go outside it gets even worse.

The point is that slow thinking is far more a product of cultivation than fast thinking, which is much more a product of pure reps and natural ability. A person can rep over and over their slow thinking, especially in a CYA corporate environment, and never get much better at it. And you are right in the sense that higher IQs are more likely to think through their mistakes and try to correct them just on their own individual basis. But the entire point of large GC orgs is that they pool knowledge and skills, and so one would expect that they would devise means of cultivating elite collective slow thinking and developing their talent to improve slow thinking, but they very much don’t. Being slow at a fast thinking task is easy to notice and either correct or eliminate at scale using familiar corporate bureaucratic methods. This is why so many different parts of GC are great at cultivating fast thinkers and shit at cultivating slow thinking/thinkers.
