One missed forehand can cost a tennis player that much money in a final set tiebreak in the late round of the slams

I'm talking about a weekly occurrence in the PGA, not the final round of a major event that went down to the wire (rarely happened historically in tennis) and 1 missed shot won the match (possibly never happened)

Exactly they're all competing for the highest spot possible no matter who's on top. In addition to the cash $$$ they have their tour card and qualifications to majors on the line every single hole.

I just found it funny how stressed I get to make par on a short putt which doesn't mean shit

yeah that adds tons of stress. every shot matters even if you dont have a chance of winning. in tennis, once you lose you go home. imagine in tennis if there was a back draw where the losers in the same round all kept playing each other for position - for money and ranking points, instead of everyone who loses in the same round getting the same. it'd be insanely stressful.

fyi, as a matter of law, no tennis match can possibly come down to one made/missed shot. you have to win by 2 points to win a game, and you have to win by 2 games to win a set, and even in a tiebreak you have to win by 2 points. by definition there's no way a tennis match can be decided by a point on which either player can win on that same point, i.e., a "double match point"

not a major but mark calcavecchias 2 footer to beat monty in the 91 ryder cup. and that was after the worst shot of all time off the tee. total choke job

that was a cursed event from the start. cheating accusations, steve pate crash injury controversy, very ugly stuff.

fortunately the us won and bernhard langer was the guy that lost it for europe in the end. any other outcome would have destroyed doods’ careers

>On the morning of the Saturday foursomes with Ballesteros partnering José María Olazábal against Raymond Floyd and Fred Couples, Ballesteros developed a small cough. After noise was coincidentally made during swings made by the United States Team on the first 2 holes, Floyd approached Ballesteros with a severe warning that he was "better than you (Ballesteros) could ever be at this" and that if Ballesteros did not stop he would reciprocate with force. phil won about the right number of majors. vs payne stewart at 99 us open it could have easily gone the other way but you could say the same about his first masters win too. 06 us open is one he “should have” won but he fucked up the last as did montgomerie. 04 maybe even more so where he three putted 17 from 5 feet iirc

rory might have like 12 if he hadn’t fucked up the masters final round in 2011 so badly. but as it is he’s done well to close out four with that wound that’s never healed

Wait why was 2011 so bad for Rory?

That's possibly the most competitive final day of a major in golf history:

"The 2011 Masters Tournament stands out for having the most players—eight in total—who held at least a share of the lead during the final round. This level of competition is unparalleled in major championships during this period.

Other notable majors with multiple lead changes on the final day include:

• 2001 U.S. Open: During the final round, Retief Goosen, Mark Brooks, Stewart Cink, and Rocco Mediate each held or shared the lead at various points. The tournament concluded with Goosen and Brooks tied, leading to an 18-hole playoff, which Goosen won.

• 2005 PGA Championship: In the final round, Phil Mickelson, Steve Elkington, Thomas Bjørn, Davis Love III, and Tiger Woods were all within a stroke of the lead, with several holding or sharing the lead during the day. Mickelson ultimately secured victory with a birdie on the 18th hole.

• 2014 PGA Championship: Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, and Rickie Fowler each held or shared the lead during the final round.

• 2015 U.S. Open: Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, and Branden Grace were among those who shared the lead on the final day.

While these tournaments featured multiple players contending for the lead, none matched the 2011 Masters in terms of the number of players sharing the lead during the final round.

started the day with a four shot lead. i recall the broadcast opening with a ridiculous nantz narrated piece basically crowning him already.

he still led after a mediocre front nine when other doods were going crazy making birdies and eagles before he hooked the shit out of his tee shot on 10 and ended up shooting 43 on the back. a disastrous meltdown
