St Louis is literally on the Mississippi River. Austin is on the Colorado River that they dammed into a lake and Seattle is on the Pacific Ocean.

Houston was founded at the confluence of mighty rivers—Buffalo Bayou and White Oak Bayou. It sprawls for miles, all the way to Galveston Bay, then down south, then out west, then up north, and farther up north. They are now building Houston exburbs that are a good 2 hours+ from Houston. Exurbs where a trip to the beach would entail an epic 3 hours drive down the shore.

Urban planning 101...cities form at points of different mediums of transportation. So historically it was always where a river met the ocean or a lake etc. However with railroads and interstates you do see some hubs form outside of traditional locations. I can't think of any though. Okc?

Chicago. In the frozen flat midwest, no elevation anywhere, the "river" is basically a stream, one of the largest cities more than a thousand miles from an ocean, no access to the great lakes like Cleveland or Buffalo, no mountains.
