Same could have been said about literally any asset that skyrocketed in the last 10 years (makes me wonder why you call this "speculation" instead of just repricing) I mean real estate speculation means homes in decent places are 2M dollars anymore, thats just what they are worth in dollars and unless half the money out there just burns up tomorrow, that will never change (not getting cheaper, anyway).

Its been hashed out pretty good on XO that intrinsic value vs speculative value is a meaningless distinction.

it's not a meaningless distinction at all. buying a bond and holding it to maturity is not speculative. you're not relying on marketplace demand for appreciation. speculating is buying something because you hope to be able to sell it for a higher price in the future. investing is buying something that you think will be reliably or more productive in the future and you may never hope to sell it.

lol buying a bond right now is literally gambling that the dollar wont lose 20% of its purchasing power before the bond matures. if inflation is higher than your coupon rate you are locking in a guaranteed loss. that is the opposite of safe.

also silver is "productive." it conducts electricity. industry literally cannot produce goods without it. by his definition buying oil is speculation because you hope to sell it to a refinery.

u are confusing "productive asset" with "financial derivative." buying physical materials that industry is desperate for is called procurement, not gambling.

he's talking about why one might buy a bond right now, im talking about the concept of buying a bond generally. i just used a bond as an example. take the usd out of the equation -- what if i gave you a secured, non-transferable loan of 10 wigits today in exchange for 12 wigits next year, and both of us expect the price of wigits to remain stable? im not specating on the price of wigits going up nor am i specjlating on your ability to repay because the note is secured. that would be a pure investment.

few things are either pure investments or speculation. all im saying is i tend not to put money in things are are overlu speculative. there is a difference.

*leans into mic* The high-tech future devices are all using more & more silver. That's why CHINA is hoarding it. It is the SPICE of space age civilization. AI datacenters need it--particularly for space concepts. China is hoarding it for their solar panel industry. It's used for many missile systems.

New Samsung batteries use ~1kg of Ag

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41560-020-0575-z

HJT (Heterojunction) solar panels use 22 mg/Watt

It has a very low recycle rate and just in time refined supply is being consumed more & more by industry. Prices were kept artificially low during peak globalism circle jerking to facilitate trade.

note that your article is from 2020.

i am very aware of the how and why silver is used in technology. that doesn't change the fact that it's price rapidly appreciating is due to speculation, not increased demand for its use as a material.

that 2020 paper was just the concept. samsung built the actual pilot line in 2023 and mass production starts in 2027.

they need that 1kg spec to make the battery stable.

we have been in a physical deficit for 7 years and inventories are down 800m ounces. the burn rate is higher than the mine rate

to be clear im not taking any position on whether silver is a bubble or it's future price. demand for investing in silver could increase perpetually. all im saying is that it's price trajectory is based on speculation. whether or not more people will buy silver intending to sell it later is something i can't predict, and i personally don't like putting significant chunks of money in things like that.

silver could go 100x just like crypto, black lotuses, and jackson pollack paintings.

for decades the paper market kept silver cheap so western tech and defense could build stuff at low cost. it worked as long as nobody asked for the real metal.

the reason it’s popping now isn't some sudden realization. we just burned through the supply buffer. deficits for 5 years straight and the vaults finally hit zero last fall. Very similar to Biden emptying the strategic petroleum reserve, but in this case we can't drill fast enough to keep up with physical demand... ~5yrs to open a new silver mine and most silver is a byproduct of other mining. very low recycle rate (it is dissipative when used in industry unless you're going to painstakingly extract tiny amounts from e-waste, which nobody does and requires melting-down entire boards in acid, etc, since the silver is alloyed with other shit at that point)

plus china shut the door on exports. the gig is up because the physical metal is gone, so the paper pricing game stopped working.

I famously sold notes for English class as well. I would copy the spark notes for the assignment and sell copies of it before class. I should have had a subscriber website but I’m sure people would have shared passwords and undercut my pricing. Handwritten notes are the gold standard. I did those too. In APUSH I would read the entire chapter and fashion out one page of notes on a piece of loose leaf and fold it up and stick it in the text book. You could buy a single, or at the end of the class for studying for the AP exam I offered the whole set for $20. I tried selling to the juniors my senior year but it was not a good seller with that crowd for some reason. I got a 5 on the APUSH exam. It ended up being worth like 6 credits of college so that was worth about $4500.
