I lived in High Holborn/Islington area for a while. I thought it was pretty nice for the $.

The town is so freakishly expensive to live in and to commute around, it really depends on where you're working and where the bus lines run.

Yeah, that's definitely one way to go. Also, you could live near Angel and take the Northern line. I'd recommend that if you like easy access to nightlife/clubs.

Also, I found that subway travel, even with the oyster, is too much for daily commutes. Buses are almost as fast and much cheaper.

it takes 20 minutes from angel to london bridge on the tube in the morning. the same trip takes 1 hour on the bus in the morning hours (and i don't even go at high peak, because i don't have to be in until 9:30).

on that budget, you are looking at very lower-midrange places, if you want to live alone. if you want a nice apartment and a nice location you'll have to go with a roommate.

if you want to live alone, 375/week is the bare min you need to spend to get something "nice" by american standards. otherwise, prepare to live in a closet with no storage space, probably on the lower ground floor or in a converted public housing block.

the credited place to live, if you want to be able to walk out your back door and find tons of shit to do on the weekends, is, of course, cheslea/kensington/notting hill. you'll probably have to either find a steal on a studio or a roomie, though, if you want to live there.

what about dorms? do any schools do like nyu in the summer? I guess getting there may 1st might be a problem for that.

i'm a grad student, and i'll be fairly busy while i'm there, so i don't need to be right in the middle of things, but i at least want to be within a reasonable walk of stuff to do (places to drink alone). i'm getting 100 pounds a day plus some sort of housing stipend. don't know the details. i could handle a studio. i'd rather not have a roommate.

anyway, thanks for all the replies. real helpful.

UCL student housing is available over the summer but I'm not sure if non-students can live in it. If you want to take the student housing route, try Nido: http://www.nidostudentliving.com/home.php.

I personally found Angel to be a bit seedy for my tastes. I really like Shoreditch as an area to both live and party.

Relevant to my interests. I'm going to spend September to December going in Holborn. Is it realistic to find a small studio in a safe area for less than 250 pounds? Me and GF staying there. We can do small, but want the area to be safe.

that seems like a reasonable budget for a studio, but probably not in holborn. also, you should know that you will pay a lot more for short term housing than if you were renting for a year or more.

that might be hard to find around Holborn, but I know a place you can get on Bayswater for a 760 a month that is spacious enough.

Chelsey if you don't mind paying $2-3 million for a 400sq ft place.
