what's the competition like?
10-20 spots
500 applicants? 1000 applicants?

I'm sorry to tell everyone that this happened to me last year. Interviewed for HUD Legal Honors, references were called, and then I heard nothing else from them. Ever. Only way I found out I was rejected was a from a friend who called their office to find out his status in mid-January. They told him that if he hadn't heard anything by then, then he didn't make the cut.
My impression of the HUD legal department was that their "Honors" program is somewhat new. They're trying to mold this program to be more like DOJ, but in the past, it was considered more of an "intern" program. Full attorneys hired through this program were called "Legal Honors Interns" a few years ago.
Let's face it, in normal times, the best and brightest didn't flock to HUD. I think they aren't used to such an enormous amount of applicants and I think they don't quite have a professional interviewing process in place. DOJ will send an automated nonselection emails, but HUD has no such tool as yet.

ssbi is the most intrusive one. Reinvestigation, I think, occurs every 5 years. (Well for me it does.) BI should be every 10 and it is less intrusive.
The following catalog of background investigations is accurate government-wide: http://www.usgs.gov/usgs-manual/handbook/hb/440-7-h/440-7-h-ch2.html
And wikipedia has an accurate description of the scope of an ssbi (trust me): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_Scope_Background_Investigation
I know there's a website where investigators will answer your questions--anonymously. I can't remember what it is. google it.
