Somewhat overlooked ITT is the fact that (virtually) all the higher-scoring blacks would have been siphoned off by the top few schools. To get the requisite number of dark visages in the facebook, the school simply had to dip lower.
At the very top schools it's entirely possible (though still rare) for an URM to match his/her classmates' average stats in every respect. After HYS--okay, say the T7--has skimmed off the cream, however, the gap is really marked throughout the "good" schools (the rest of the top 50, say). Blacks are only ~13% of the US population anyway, and I doubt that they're much higher a percentage of the law-applicant pool; so smaller absolute numbers, and that stubborn ~1SD gap between average performances by whites and blacks, make for a gap of 10 LSAT points or more (on average) at many, many schools. |

URMs can do the first year/paralegal level work but struggle thereafter. You do not want to have to cover their work and yours and/or take responsibility for their mistakes, which you are expected to catch.
My firm does not have too many, and ours are pretty good, but I will never forget one who cost us a slice of work that probably brought in $1m a year. It was actually pretty hilarious because the partners didn't seem to mind too much. Oh, how things have changed. |
