"halfway decent fund" is really open to interpretation.

id say for a decent established fund (like the ones I mentioned), yeah at least $1mm. of course sometimes feeder funds offer you to ability to invest with those managers at much lower minimums.

there are also newer managers hungry for capital who are probably open to lower LP commitments too but i think they're very hard to find without decent contacts.

VERY INTERESTING!

I think a) lower interest rates plus b) excess cash on balances sheets will lead to more deals being done. But are the spreads going to be there? I guess so man, I guess so because my sense is that peepLOL are still nervous about the economy, foreign debt defaults, insert cause of moment here. So if you can find a skilled manager in that space (Kellner Cohen DiLeo comes to mind as a "pure" merger arb manager but a lot of managers invest in merger arb as more "Event Driven" approach) I think the returns can be quite attractive with low correlation to equities overall. I just wouldn't invest money I need back in the next say 2 -3 years or so.

What do hedge fund guys invest in? Do you guys just dump all your money into your fund (do you have opporunities to leverage up the investment?) Or do you do the opposite due to correlation between bonus and fund performance and put everything in cash?

well, i think it's common for the founders to have like 98% of the liquid net worth invested in their own fund. that's a big red flag if the owners dont have any skin in the game. so they can leverage that in sofaras the fund itself is leveraged overall but i dont think you can invest in a hedge fund "on margin" per say. this is also pretty common for staff (more senior analysts, traders, head of ops, etc) that meet the SEC standards for qualified investors. it's also not uncommon to see accounts for family members managed in perhaps a seperately managed account style e.g. put highest conviction long idea into an ira for your wife, for example.

other than that i think it varies individual to individual. i would like to think a lot stick to index funds but who knows?

convertible arb, for sure.

stat arb is one of those things that works up until it doesnt (like your del sol, no?). plus it tends to be more of a "black box" strategy which makes me uncomfortable. convert arb is more fundamentally based and i think it's easier to understand the risk/reward associated with it. stat arb goes to shiTTT in periods of high stress ala end of 2008.

depending on the sort of stuff you're doing now:

equity long / short that is bottoms up focused

merger arb / event driven if you do a lot of antitrust work

distressed debt if you do a lot of restructuring work
