Set thirty years later, Grisham's new novel portrays Mitch McDeere still pursuing an elusive partnership at Bendini, Lambert & Locke only to be foiled repeatedly by a shrewd, fast-talking legal secretary named Shamika Brown.
In one dramatic scene, McDeere confronts his rival at a water cooler in the firm's mahogany-paneled office:
"I can still make partner, it will happen, I can assure you," he said.
"Mitch, you be [sic] here thirty years and still can't get a clue!" she replied sarcastically.
"It doesn't matter. Time is a lie and age is flame," he shot back.

It is literally 33 years later, Abby divorced Mitch’s ass, Mitch found out his daughter wasn’t even his, Mitch got disbarred, took too many drugs, moved to Key West, is homeless, and when Jimmy Buffet died, Mitch took it upon himself to insufflate a Tony Montana sized mountain of fentanyl laced cocaine, at a public beach on Marathon Key (having been kicked out of Key West), succumbing almost immediately to his indulgences, hubris, and lack of shame.
