The birds can’t be separated from one another, the doctor explained, and Ms. Lesser can’t be separated from the birds. The letter ended with an anodyne sentence that should have been understood as a live grenade: “Thank you for accommodating Ms. Lesser’s disability according to the Americans With Disabilities Act.”
