The median income for a working age person (18-65) is 26k, according to US tax returns. Of course some people earn unreported income (waiters etc) but I'm doubtful the true number is above 30k or so. The median income household (includes households with more than one earner) is about 49k. A household earning 110k is easily in the top 10%. I think 1% starts at about 350k or so. what about MFH in and of itself counts toward standard of living? access to a wider variety of dining, recreation and entertainment in MFH is not enough since you have to have a certain income to take advantage of those things. living spaces are smaller. maybe good public transportation? |

so for a young couple, it's $1000 in car costs and $1000 mortgage payment on 3500 sq foot home or $3000 apartment plus subway/taxis in NYC.
it no way makes up for it but a car isn't free of course.
