Should I call and ask? I don't understand it either. The only thing I can think is that when they asked, "So you are only looking in Pittsburgh?" I admitted to also looking in DC, but explained in detail about how much I want to come home, blah, blah, blah. I was rejected by two Pgh firms and accepted by one. The one I really wanted to work for only hires 2 people for the Summer, so that could be the issue too I guess, but come ON.

I am between two firms. One is top 40 and has a reputation for being not so friendly. The other is top 60 and has a reputation for being excedingly nice. I think I could find happiness at either. If I go to the nice one, I'd probably do corporate transactional work, at the not nice one, probably white collar crime & foreign corrupt practices act stuff.

I have a thread about choosing between a top 25 that is not so freindly, a top 35 that may or may not be freindly and a barely vault that is, as best as I can tell, very freindly. It is difficult to check pointless prestige whoring.

I think in your case though, the difference is small enough you chould go where you want.

Yeah--it isn't just prestige though. I think the people at the not so nice place are amazing as far as their qualifications go and the work seems really interesting. The other people have slightly less amazing credentials and slightly less interesting work, but overall, I think they are more like me as far as personality goes. The good thing is that I can use German in both places, which is somewhat important to me.

It isn't. I am very happy. I am happy here, eventhough I hate this place. Hating this place doesn't keep me from having fun. The issue is that I want a house, I want good cheap, restaurants, good grocery stores, fewer self-important social climbers, a better art scene, more nature, less trafic. Everything that is good here is old as far as I can see, which makes it a great place to visit, but not as interesting to live in.

i see...a friend of mine started at wilmer two weeks ago...the only thing they seem to be a fan of is working the hell out of the attorneys.

I'm not sure that distinguishes them from most good firms.

a friend of mine started work at kirkpatrick & lockhart, and after 3 weeks, walked down the to HR office and said "today is my last day."

so if that was your dream firm, don't sweat it.

i really liked their DC office, and thought I had a smashing screening interview. It was my most surprising non-callback. But they have a rep of being one of the better QofL firms, don't they? I wonder what went wrong with your friend.

their corporate group is dead. he spent 3 weeks reading non-fiction books at his desk, and finally decided he was wasting his time.

one of my friends said the on campus screener from K&L-DC was amazing/awesome/cool, and didn't get a callback, and a another friend who did a callback said the people there seemed miserable. who knows.

whoever does the OCI is just really engaging, i guess.

What people fail to realize is that your primary interaction will be with two or so partners. So, in a firm of say 200 partners, the overall experience might be above average but an individual associate or a particular practice group might be horrible experience.
