seems like there are a lot of truths in here that indubitably apply to not just Goldman Sachs but the entire professional service industry (banking, law, consulting).

but, and maybe it's just me, it seems like this bro is heavily self-promoting with this op ed. it reads as half scathing criticism and half resume piece. i'd bet $10,000 that he's starting a boutique advisory firm, not just retiring to golf or an unrelated business - this guy is baiting new clients.

LOL, Gordon Gekko finds a conscience (and a robust speaker fee) decrying capitalism.

Standard, "I'm reformed against self-interest, now pay me huge sums of money as a speaker/tell-all book, etc etc."

Expect him to make the rounds as speaker or to write a book decrying the evils of GS. I'm assuming he couldn't get team lead and finally came up with a better scam.

Also, I like how he harkens back to a mythical golden age. Truth is, they had the biggest losses in 29, because they were involved in highly speculative trading then, they've been involved in IPOs since Sears, they lost big on their highly speculative bond market in 94. Oh, and they underwrote nearly every bubble tech IPO.

Let's not kid ourselves, it's been a den of sharks with no moral conscience for well over a century.

Except that none of his complaints had much to do with trading or underwriting. They were all about how GS practices institutional sales, which may well have changed.

That's total bullshit. In Liar's Poker, Michael Lewis talks about how the firm had a large block of some shitty stock or bond or derivative product that the firm was pressuring the sales traders to dump on one of their clients, and how everyone sucked his dick when he got one of their big institutional clients to take it. That is what these guys do.

I don't think you guys are fully grasping the implications of the willingness to screw over clients. If you are willing to screw over clients, no one is sacred. You don't care about anything but the bottom line and will do whatever is in your means to make money. And with the revolving door between Washington and Goldman Sach's offices, they have a lot of means. Read All the Devils are Here and Confidence Men if you haven't already.

He's not talking about counterparties here bro, he's talking about clients on whose behalf trades are executed. Those parties are most certainly clients. (They pay commissions to GS to make trades for them and to receive advice on what trades they should or shouldn't make.)

Not sure how you can divine that when he's talking about running the S&T analyst training program and going to sales meetings. He is cleraly not talking about an advisory role and if that's what he is interested in, he should've moved to another desk at the bank or a bank that wants that kind of shitty lower margin work.

In any event, the "clients" know if they're trading opposite GS and should not expect GS to be trading out of the goodness of its heart.

Are you fucking stupid? Except in exceptionally rare circumstances (i.e. Abacus), clients are not trading opposite the investment banks that solicit their sales/trading business. Do you know anything about S&T?

You're the one who is implying they are doing so.

My point is that the people he seems to think they're ripping off are not their "clients" for that very reason. And if he wants to switch over to the GSAM side of the house, I'm sure they'd be happy to take him, since he claims to have such strong ties with large hedge funds and SWF's.

On those rare occasions an advisory client is trading against the advisor, they know and have to consent to it.

My proudest moments in life — getting a full scholarship to go from South Africa to Stanford University, being selected as a Rhodes Scholar national finalist, winning a bronze medal for table tennis at the Maccabiah Games in Israel, known as the Jewish Olympics — have all come through hard work, with no shortcuts. Goldman Sachs today has become too much about shortcuts and not enough about achievement. It just doesn’t feel right to me anymore.

OH WHAT A COVER LETTER!

replace Goldman Sachs with Microsoft, General Electric, McKinsey, Procter & Gamble, and Exxon Mobil - the premise of the article would be the exact same.

truth is, this is the reality of the situation, and in our post post post-modern world, you'll always have 99% of your staff thinking and feeling like this, and maybe 1% of your staff actually articulating such sentiments, and 0.001% of your staff publishing such ideas in the New York Times.

All the best to Greg Smith, but his issues are not exclusive to Goldman Sachs. All the best to him to find his true calling in life, but in this day and age, and the fact that he spent his past 12 years crafting his persona and image to the conformist expectations of others, it will require some soul-searching. good on him for having the courage to realize his current plight and for doing something about it.

let's see, this guy was a nobody who basically slaved away for a bunch of years (without complaints apparently) and now all of sudden, he figures out that a large bank is in it to make money YEARS after GS was already called out? in S&T no less? yeah, right. this article has disgruntled mid-level employee who got a shitty bonus/getting laid off soon all over it. just like how he was a rhodes finalist and bronze medal winner in some fake olympics, this guy almost makes it but is never the superstar who gets the big bonus and the promotion. also, i like how one of his biggest accomplishments was getting a "full scholarship to stanford." that would be a accomplishment if stanford gave MERIT scholarships except they don't (it's all need based).

here's a comment on the WSJ blog:

According to the Stanford Daily, Greg Smith, who “represented South Africa twice at the World Maccabiah Games” (http://archive.stanforddaily.com/?p=1004297), was “a Stanford sophomore” in 2001. That would make him Stanford Class of 2003. So at most he has been working at GS for a little over 8 years and could have spent a maximum of 3 years as a full time employee at Goldman before Lloyd Blankfein became CEO and he never worked at Goldman when it was a partnership. I don’t think he could possibly have enough perspective to make a good assessment of what GS was like in the good old days.

because he starts the article off by saying he's worked @ goldman for 12 years (when he graduated from UG in 2003)

because goldman's culture hasn't radically changed over the last 8 years - especially considering the first 3 years he was just a bitch analyst

because he himself is being disingenuous in asserting his time at the firm, his full scholarship to Stanford, and the notion that he's some sort of athlete for having played ping pong at the jewish olympics

even assuming that GS "lies" to their clients, his background matters because as just another GS mid-level person, he has no power to provide any independent advice to clients outside of what his superiors tell him to do. he himself has "lied" to his clients for 8 years and it's just as morally wrong to lie about what he did at GS.

He brags in his op-ed that "Over the course of my career I have had the privilege of advising two of the largest hedge funds on the planet, five of the largest asset managers in the United States, and three of the most prominent sovereign wealth funds in the Middle East and Asia. My clients have a total asset base of more than a trillion dollars. I have always taken a lot of pride in advising my clients to do what I believe is right for them, even if it means less money for the firm. This view is becoming increasingly unpopular at Goldman Sachs. Another sign that it was time to leave."

what he's writing is a blatant lie and a gross exaggeration of how much power somebody at his level has. those hedge funds aren't "his" clients. that's like a law firm associate saying they "advised and represented" some XYZ company in a multi-billion deal when they shuffled around the signature pages. those are GS's institutional clients and his job is to do as his bosses tell him to do. am i expected to believe that he "advised" GS's clients to NOT buy those derivatives because he thought that was in their best interest? of course not! he would've been fired a long time ago if he went off the reservation. instead, he was just another cog who did exactly as he was told and lied and lied and lied to his clients so he could keep his job and get his bonus until he realized that he was never going to get that promotion and his bonus sucked and now BAM, he's going to accuse his company of doing exactly what he did for 8 years.

i take issue w/ the fact that he's somehow absolving himself of any responsibility for being part of the same machine as if he's done differently when he's done EXACTLY the same thing that all others at his level at GS do on a daily basis because his position simply doesn't give him the power to be some renegade exec at GS.

on a sidenote, it's also laughable that he's talking about the poor, vulnerable "muppet" clients and at the same time bragging about how big his clients are. it's completely inconsistent. these hedge funds are equally sophisticated as goldman. it's impossible to "lie" to them and in that business, it's always a "you scratch our back, we'll scratch yours." everyone wants to make money and these clients are more than willing to fork over tons of fees for it. that's how it's worked forever and nothing's changed in the measly 8 years he worked there.

Should be two different sides of the house. If GS is managing the client in question's funds it would presumably be subject to the Advisers Act and have to jump through a bunch of hurdles to do a principal or agency trade.

From all appearances this guy was in the S&T side not the GSAM side.
