You can go ahead and offload an LLM to your system RAM, but your 4090 will get bottlenecked by your CPU at that point and it will run like dogshit. You'd be better off running a Threadripper, but then you're paying way more than you'd pay for any comparable Mac. Games and shit probably won't run right on a Threadripper either.
So in reality, you have 24gb RAM to work with and that's it. The GPU cores on a M2 Ultra aren't as fast as a 4090, but LLMs that go well over 100gb are usable. People are doing it. And M3 Ultra is on the way with support for up to 256gb UNIFIED RAM, with insane bandwidth. |

They are in no hurry to sell off their inventory of 3nm wafers, and instead they will price gouge you all day on soldered RAM and soldered storage devices so that the last thing you'll pay for is the "Max" or "Ultra" versions of their M-series SoCs.
Another way of looking at is that if America lost access to TSMC semiconductors tomorrow, Apple would be sitting on the nation's largest supply of the most advanced, thermally efficient, and generally capable semiconductors. Not even Nvidia can claim that.
And despite all of this, they still offer insane value for money if you're running LLMs right now. The difference in speed between a RTX 4090 and M2 Ultra is like 30 seconds vs 2 minutes to process the same input, except Apple gives you 5x more RAM to fuck with. The CPU in your gaming computer would take hours to run the same task, so the difference between Apple and Nvidia here is not as meaningful as it might seem. |
