I currently carry 40k at 4.8%, but want to also save for a house 3-4 years from now. So I either invest the money for now and go for a smaller mortgage (carry some interim invest risks) or pay off loan and go with a bigger mortgage. Mortgage interest payments are deductible, but student loan are not; mortgage rate currently at historic low, lower than 4.8%, but not guarantee to stay this low 4 years from now.

Which is credited move, pay off loan or save for down payment?

His credit report will have his loan on there and his mortgage will be higher for it. There is no free lunch or pulling a fast one anyway.

LOL what, 40k in student loans is not going to impact his mortgage rate, assuming he has good credit otherwise

it's not like he has $200k socked away somewhere and isn't paying off the loan because it's at an absurdly low rate
