The more kids the better if you can minimally afford it. At some point it starts going downhill as your attention is spread too thin, but that point is pretty darn high.

seems mostly right to me, though obviously we can't read too much into the adoption studies that they use as evidence -- there's a lot of things that could potentially be missed by a study like that. I think their overall point is correct, which is that most people worry too much about how they raise their kids when so much of it is genetically determined or simply outside our control. worry about the things you can control, and don't worry about the things you can't.

I've also heard that it's common for parents to start believing in "nature over nurture" explanations once they have their second kid and can see how differently they respond to the same sort of parenting.

This is right. Especially true about what parents believe based on experience.

Parenting matters a ton in the sense that kids need a good virtuous role model parent who loves them a lot and loves to be around them and spend time with them. But kids absolutely don't need a helicopter parent who is at every game of their life and coaching them intensively at every step.

You don't have to be a helicopter parent; however, I feel as if this book does a disservice in stating you do not need to compel your kids into piano or violin lessons because it won't have an impact on their intelligence. Most people become adept at an instrument (and other skill related hobbies) through practice. If you don't have your child start young; they will be behind to a large degree. However, the book doesn't care about this (or other skills) because the children will turn out just as "intelligent".

only if you are poor. For the rich, all you need is an heir and a spare.
