FM Sergey #Lavrov: I do not want to sound anti-European. But over the past 500 years all tragedies in the world originated in Europe or occurred owing to European policies
The colonisation, the Crimean War, Napoleon, World War I, Hitler.
The Russians are not allies or friends. This is neo-Soviet ideology with a third worldist bent and Lavrov himself is a former Soviet official and Soviet apologist and probably the most effective and dangerous diplomat in the UN atm. Certainly on the UNSC
Trump and Zelenskyyyyy really need to get over themselves and look at what's going on imo. I'm wading through pages of unrestrained Russian slopaganda on Twitter atm and lots of these voters are eating it up uncritically

I agree and this is where it gets sticky
The window for courting Russia closed with Euromaidan. The best route there which was just avoid antagonizing Russia long enough for their state to continue to disintegrate into oligarchic irrelevance and for Ukraine to naturally fall into the NATO sphere of influence is gone; it seems like our intel guys jumped the gun, possibly for reasons of domestic political influence and overconfidence in the Ukranian position
Emboldening all of these European leaders of questionable loyalty (Meloni especially) to break away from NATO/the American defense sphere is not cr though. Ukraine support is organically very popular in the EU as many of those countries are legitimately threatened by Russia and have a recent sense of history for the Soviet occupations and all the brutality that it entailed
America needs to show commitment without getting bogged down or escalating the situation. It's a difficult and delicate situation and so far Trump has made some oafish moves that probably originate in the firing of old hands working on the region and his historical propensity for surrounding himself with biased advisors of questionable professional skill. Putin is very smart, Russian-intel linked, and has historically shown a great deal of skill in playing the long game. Losing EU confidence in an American-led NATO over a trifling amount of money plays right into his hands and increases credit in the long-standing Russia and China promoted idea that America is a faithless ally and an erratically-acting danger on the world stage
It's a bad situation all around now and showing the weakness engendered by the return of gilded era spoils system politics in the States
