My RWD Lexus cannot drive in the snow at all without winter tires. With winter tires I've easily navigated hills in snowstorms where SUVs were sliding all over and slamming into parked cars. We had a big blizzard a few years ago, roads were fucked for days, and I was out giving friends rides around town because their cars couldn't handle the snow.

The tires are maybe 10 years old tops and only get used for about 4 months per year. They are stored indoors when not being used and the rubber is still in very good shape.

All seasons last a lot longer too when you're not using them in winter, which helps offset the up front cost of getting a winter wheel package.

You will most likely need separate, smaller rims for the winter tires because the tires are thicker and have a larger diameter. It only takes a few minutes to change the wheels.

Probably a divide here between poasters who live in NYC or south, where the snow is not that serious and melts quickly and poasters who live north of NYC, where you spend the winter driving through six inches of new snow on top of a bunch of ice and packed down shit. If you drive without snow tires somewhere like Vermont you are begging to get fucked hard on a hill (either failure to reach the top or skidding down it).

They make a difference in the mid atlantic and other areas that are prone to freezing rain. People call them "snow tires" but they are actually called winter tires because they outperform all-seasons any time the temperature drops below 45. They are made of softer rubber that does not get hard in cold temperatures. They run better on dry pavement, let alone icy and snowy roads.

You dont need snow tires in NYC because they salt and plow like crazy here. The ice is a problem for about 2 minutes after every snow storm. I went to Cornell and in upstate NY shit is different and you need snow tires to not go off a mountain.

Seems like your sole fact leads to the opposite conclusion from the one that you reached. I did the same thing driving in an early winter storm before changing tires and that is the main reason I believe in winter tires. 360 on the highway can easily lead to death if some huge truck happens to be passing you at 60 mph at that moment, and your best step to prevent it is using the right tires for conditions.

No offense, but you don't sound like someone who understands the midwest or winter driving

no offense, but people in the midwest who claim snow tires are a waste of time are idiots.

I've never said snow tires are a waste of time. In fact, I think they are very credited. I personally don't drive enough miles per year to justify them.

The real reason most people do just fine running all-seasons year-round in the upper midwest is that they spend a *fuckton* of money on snowplowing and salt around here.

Winter tires (not "snow tires") will perform better even on dry pavement.

Plus they will be 180 during that time between when you get walloped and it takes a few days for road crews to get it all under control.

I've driven in winter in the midwest. It's easy because it's flat and they have good plowing infrastructure in the cities. Driving on icy/snowy hills is a very different story.

For a moment back in the 70's or so, it was common to run studded winter tires in the midwest. But then they came to the conclusion that tire studs were chewing up the roads, so they were completely banned in MN/WI/MI/IL.

https://images.tirebuyer.com/visual-aids/pages/education/What_Are_Winter_Studs/Studded-tire-laws-by-state+copy.jpg

What happened next was that the tire-buying public didn't understand the utility of a studless winter tire, so nobody used them.

cr. "Snow tires" are not a thing except in rare circumstances. Winter tires are very sensible and cr.

I had a Mazda 626 back in college. It was a rear wheel drive car that was like 2100 pounds or something close -- ridiculously light like that and it was only 125hp so also under-powered as all fuck so you had shit traction and no power so it would rev and rev and rev and you still couldnt be sure the tires were actually doing anything when on ice. Anyway -- driving that shit in the snow on summer tires was pure Russian roulette. Snow tires are the only reason I'm alive.

The 2.0L was a 4 popper and it did 125hp and a laughable 127 pounds of torque. Their current 2.0L 4 popper does 155 hp so people who say engine tech hasnt progressed any are funny. Just do 25% more power in a basically identical package, bro.

Why are they putting a naturally aspirated 2.0L engine in a car that size?

Upstate NY is not even hill country -- it's mountains up there. Without snow tires you could well take a 500 foot dive.

Some RUD chains and you can drive around on ice up and down hills if you are 4wd, even better with lockers.

Driving in winter on summer tires in winter (where there is winter) is suicide and should be illegal as it is in Europe. All seasons tires are generally fine.

Snows or something with decent traction are pretty necessary with a rear wheel drive car or 2wd pick up with no weight in the back depending on where you are.

Lots of sports cars only come with summer tires (although most of them get parked for winter), some german cars have them (notably sport package mercs and bmw), but most notably, the cheapest tires for some cars are summer fuzion or other no name brands and poors put them on not knowing any better. This is why you see 15 year old BMWs with body damage slipping all over the road in light snow ....

The cr tire of you want something truly "all season" is the Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady. It is the only all-season I'm aware of that is also certified as a severe snow tire. They are expensive but they are much cheaper than buying a second set of winter tires/wheels.
