It had far less shitlib messaging than your average 2020 late-night show or mega-corporation tweet, although this is almost certainly in large part due to it being written pre-2016. It gets into the deep cuts of Hamilton's life (beyond what most people know; I knew he had a sex scandal but not the particulars). I liked the Jefferson rivalry and thought it did a good job of mocking him (showing him "from hamilton's perspective") while also making it clear he was a super-chad polyglot big-dicked badass. The casting of blacks in virtually all of the roles is unambiguously and successfully designed to humanize and lionize them.
I can see some people finding it corny, and I can *definitely* see people being like "wait, this is what's shattering all-time records, getting called the GOAT, etc.?" It's too bubblegum -- too designed to be merely entertaining and catchy -- to be a GOAT contender, since that's really supposed to be reserved for capital-a Art. But (very surprisingly to me) there's almost no case to be made that it's godawful/unbearable.
I fucking hate Miranda and really wanted to hate the shit out of this and Moana; both are actually pretty good. |
