at least at my company, almost all of our patent lawyers have a hard technical background, i.e., ee, cs...and most have undergrad and advanced degrees in these fields. so, i would say that they actually put a heavy premium on this.

internationally, entire legal dept is over 400...prob half attorneys. We hire all kinds of attorneys, though i would say primarily, patent lit, ip transactional, corporate and employment.

Salaries are somewhat of a mystery, at least within the legal dept. definitely different than in a firm where you know basically what everyone else makes. For me, compensation is actually not that far off from my level at biglaw (considering my comp now is salary, annual bonus and equity). I left after 3.5 years. I do general ip transactional/licensing work.

corporate primarily do m&a. however, they also do "general commercial" work, which is tied to certain products. this can include agreements with vendors, licensing for the products, etc.

lawyers here seem to stay for a while. those that have gone have left for other large tech companies (some have left and come back).

people do come from all over the country, as well as internationally. i relocated to the bay to work for the company.

i had 3.5 years in m&a/ip transactions. those groups are pretty solid if you want to go in house at a tech company, plus patent lit obviously.

But if you want to go in house at any corp, i would say corp, tax, employment and regulatory are pretty solid practice areas. i was surprised to see the number of govt lawyers at our company, though these ppl held pretty high offices in their respective govt agency.

matters less the farther out you get from school. however, i would say that the vast majority of attorneys here are from t14 (and of these high # from stanford, harvard, NU and boalt). however, school is not determinative. one of the most respected atty's in our department came from santa clara u.

so, as in house counsel, you basically make the same salary as a 5th year biglaw associate?

more or less yes. though law firm comp is on a much steeper curve as you continue to progress. it is much flatter here, i.e., i don't foresee any huge increases in salary in the next few years.

how much do law school grades play a part in the interview process? I had fucking fantastic 1L grades at a CCN (junior at v10 now), then completely took a disgusting and obvious shit all over my transcript 2/3L. how fucked?

i think they matter. however, my company cares a lot more about grades than they should. i would say generally speaking, the primary factors are 1) experience 2) personality/fit 3) law school 4) grades (matter of importance in that order).

would an interviewer at your company, assuming i phrased it appropriately, at least respect the fact that, by putting forth minimal effort in 2/3L, i was acting rationally in that after 2L oci i lost all incentive to be a competitive asshole just to ensure a job at graduation?

sure. i mean, it all depends on how you spin it. and if you were particularly strong in the other factors i mentioned, i.e. had good experience for the position you were interviewing for and your interviewers liked you personally, then i think it could be overlooked (or at least considered less).

Put it this way, a few months after I started working here, one of the attorneys who interviewed me told me that in the end, the position came down to me and this guy who actually was at my firm and in the same practice group (though at a different office). He came from a higher ranked school than me and graduated magna (I was cum laude). The attorney said that it was a pretty easy choice to pick me over him b/c people just seemed to think that I was a better fit for the group. I didn't know the other guy that they were considering that well, but he definitely came across as biglaw douchey in the times I met him.

do you understand what that means though?

"better fit" is corporate talk that means you are more like a corporate drone who will act like a cog in the machine and not quit when something more interesting/exciting comes along.

i guess what im saying is not being considered a "good fit" by some interviewers may not be a bad thing. they don't look for charisma, or whatever in a lot of these positions, they just want people who will do what they are told and are ok with their corporate culture.

have you ever been on a hiring committee (or participated in a meeting)? Guarantee that the first question asked about a candidate is whether people liked him/her...not, 'will he do as we tell him' or 'do you think he's gonna bail'.

i actually didn't think he was that bad, but he's def not the type of dude i would want to hang out with outside of work, though I only met him in person a handful of times. I worked on a few deals with him when I was a first and second year, and he was a year ahead of me. I remember he was kinda douchey on internal conference calls, i.e. when the partner would ask him to do something, he would say things like, "got it, big guy". And he would volunteer to do work when it really wasn't necessary, for example, i remember a deal we were on, he volunteered to draft and put together all of the sig pages for the deal docs like weeks ahead of closing. It was pretty clear that entities would be changing, and it was way too early to do sig pages b/c they would have to be redone anyway. i think he just wanted to gun and show the partners that he was down to do the stupid busy work. I just felt like he was the type of person that tried really hard to be cool and to ingratiate himself with the higher ups, though it would come off as forced and inauthentic.

How much does the law firm itself matter among prospective hires; i.e., V10 v. V50 etc.? Are there specific firms that are more desirable?

Also, what's the shortest time from law school your department would consider hiring someone?

I think firm matters a decent amount. I came from V10, and there are a good amount of people from similar firms here - most of the people from my group left corp depts at Wachtell/Cravath/Cleary. There are also many people from good regional firms, i.e. Wilson, Cooley, Quinn. Many of the patent guys are from respected patent boutiques, though I wasn't really that familiar with these firms prior to coming here.

Thanks, brother. Two last questions:

Going along with the above--any opinion on Fenwick & West?

Also, how many people usually apply for any one position that opens up? Are there any sneaky ways to back-door a position?

I know that fenwick doesn't have a very prestigious vault ranking, but they are highly thought of in SV. Since they serve many clients here, it is pretty easy for them to transition in-house to tech companies. I know a number of ex-fenwick people at other tech companies here.

No idea how many people apply for any one position. I got the job after an internal recruiter called me (i wasn't actively looking to leave the firm at the time). I know that we put a premium on candidate referrals, so any contacts you have at a given company (legal or not) would probably be the best way to get your foot in the door. Also, the in-house community in SV isn't really that big. Many people transition between companies, and for whatever reason, internal recruiters like people with previous in-house experience. So, even if the job with your dream company isn't available at the moment, it could be advantageous to take a job with smaller similar companies in the same region, i.e. I know people at our company that have come from places like Adobe, Intuit, etc.

Hours are generally stable. I'm in the office by 8:30 and leave by 4ish to try to beat traffic back to the city. Will get most of my work done before then...but I'll usually answer a few emails during the evening. Our office is usually cleared out by 5:30-6. I usually work out during lunch.

One telling example of how my post-firm life is different, is that about 6 months after I started working here, I had some late meetings and didn't get home til like 8pm, and my wife was like, 'wtf, you're home so late'; whereas at the firm, 8pm was an early day.

[edit to address your other question]

Haven't met that many finance/cap markets people here. our company is sitting on a ridiculous amount of cash and does virtually no financing transactions. however, i do know one guy that came from a firm and he did primarily real estate finance prior to coming here. he works with our corp real estate group here.

I'm in the office from 8:30-4ish. I work with a good amount of people in New York, so I will generally do maybe an hour of work prior to coming into the office since they're 3 hours ahead of me (mostly respond to emails)...and I will do about an hour of work after I get home.

2L at a T10 school, below median, applying for summer positions working in the legal department of some major companies, many of them tech companies. I have no background in IP law and have not taken any courses in that area. Do you have any recommendations on how to show an interest in IP law via my cover letter when applying and also just any general recommendations on how to best sell myself for positions like these?
