Have to take a few hours in solitude to recover from this shit

The problem imho with the Japanese is they really aren't capable of true melancholy, this is hard to put into words but for example, they'd never be able to write something on the level of Celine, that sort of European 'everyday' misery, they arent capable of it

They only know how to make life seem either completely brutalized hell or EXTREMELY saccharine & idealized, so when you watch one of these anime shows and basically get brutalized or a slice of heaven, when it ends, the whiplash is crazy. Its actually hard work to watch some of this shit emotionally imo compared to just reading miserable books by Euros like houllebecq or some shit where ucan just shrug and be like 'idgaf'

Hard to say

Lots of 'required watching' to get some of it

Have to have a certain personality to like it

For example, just to illustrate the point of my OP

Evangelion is a classic, very brutal, Attack on Titan same deal and its a modern classic now

Then you have these shows that are almost idyllic 'slice of life' shows where nothing happens, but theyre just so overwhelming they make you want to swan dive off a bridge imho, like I dont want to be alive anymore after watching Mysterious Girlfriend X, its a 12 episode show about 2 kids dating, but it just underscores how SHIT real life is just in juxtaposition

Like If this was a Western 'Netflix' or HBO show, it'd be 'gritty' and it would totally soften the blow IMHO, because you could laugh it off and Not Care - whereas the Yamato are basically incapable of this, they can ONLY show you an unvarnished picture of heaven/hell

This is why they make such good Games. They put themselves through Hell to bring the divine to life. Westerners accept mediocrity

This is just a very fraught q.

You can go on My Anime List and check out by most popular but its going to be mostly the 'shonen slop' (i.e. mostly action adventure garbage enjoyed by hordes of niggers and spics)

For me, I dont have 5 anime that touched me that I would recommend OUT to other people, very embarrassing and personal IMHO. Most people will recommend you boilerplate stuff like "grave of the fireflies" which really gets to the heart of my OP, this shit is MISERABLE viewing and gut wrenching stuff & almost not enjoyable at all, its just too fucking heavy

You really have to sift your way through a lot of procedurally made derivative stuff to find something that you suddenly click with & lose 10hrs in. I just dont know man. Very hard to say. My tastes are eclectic

I liked Evangelion, Attack on Titan, Berserk for the "brutal action" sort of stuff with good world building

Heady stuff, Haibane Renmei, Lain< Last Exile

For the comfort watching I liked Watamote, Mysterious Girlfriend X, Dress Up Darling, Uncle from Another World, Mushoku Tensei
