If you took the average sloppy office worker idiot & gave them elite running coaches & a personal chef and masseuse and a cryochamber and hot tub etc could they run a 4 minute mile within 2 years

ChatGPT's response:

Running a 4-minute mile is extremely rare, achieved by less than 0.0001% of the population, requiring elite genetics and years of intense training. With short-term training (6–12 months), about 50% of healthy adults can run a mile in under 8 minutes, and with long-term training (2+ years), about 10% might achieve sub-6-minute times. Only 1–2% of highly trained athletes ever approach a sub-5-minute mile, showcasing the steep curve of improvement and the rarity of elite-level performance.

If someone 39 years old can run a 5:10 mile do you think they could get to sub 4 minutes? Maybe train for speed and take testosterone and wear a really aerodynamic pair of shorts?

You do realize it's ChatGPT speaking, amirite? Here's the response:

Running a sub-4-minute mile is extremely unlikely for a 39-year-old, even with a 5:10 mile as a starting point, testosterone supplementation, or aerodynamic gear. Here's why:

Physiological Limits: A 5:10 mile is impressive but far from the level of speed and efficiency required for a sub-4-minute mile. The improvement needed (over 25% faster) is enormous, even for younger elite athletes.

Age Factor: At 39, the body's peak aerobic capacity (VO2 max), recovery ability, and muscle elasticity are naturally lower than in peak running years (late teens to early 30s).

Testosterone and Gear: While testosterone might marginally improve recovery and performance, and aerodynamic gear could shave fractions of a second, these are negligible compared to the gap between a 5:10 mile and sub-4:00.

Conclusion: Even with optimal training, advanced gear, and performance enhancement, achieving a sub-4-minute mile is likely beyond reach. However, significant improvement (e.g., sub-5-minute mile) with focused speed training is more realistic.

I think my best was 5:19 when I was in 18:00 5K shape, but I never really worked on mile times and only ran one or two mile races. This was post 30. Probably less than 1% of the population could break 5:00

“There are seven billion people, but only a thousand and change have ever run a sub four-minute mile—that’s astonishing. And only three, after 40, have ever gone under four,” Famiglietti says.

The three runners who belong in that exclusive latter group are Bernard Lagat, Eamonn Coghlan, and Anthony Whiteman

Extremely hard.

Good buddy of mine was a top 10 Olympic trials in the US 1500m finisher

He run a bunch of equivalent sub 4:00 1500 times (equivalent to like 3:50), but only ever ran 4:00:01 in a real mile.

Mostly because there aren't many mile races

It's his biggest regret in life
