Some good courses for people interested in corporate practice are Corporations, Tax, Bankruptcy, Securities Regulation, maybe Secured Transactions, a drafting class if it's available. Obviously not all at the same time, or you'd shoot yourself.

Those are all good ones - a class that's probably required, a couple that are good for practice, and an easy one - sounds ilke a good mix. I'd agree that it's best to balance out the hard classes a bit. It's probably good to take corps as soon as possible, so you won't run into prerequisites if you want to take other corporate classes down the line.

Im assuming you are at harvard, so here is the breakdown for you:

Take Corps with Subramanian.

Take M&A with Strine

Take Tax with Abreu or Kaplow (if he is giving it)

Take Con law with Parker because he cares the least about boring shitty doctrine

Take Sec REg in the winter term with Ferrell (Scot sucks ass, avoid him at all costs).

Take analytical methods in the spring when the profs teach it all together.

At some point try to work in: Bankruptcy with Warren, secured trasactions, corporate finance, Antitrust, and the other corporate classes. If you are into governance and that crap there are all sorts of seminars on that topic.

Come work for a firm with me! You'll make things more fun! :)

(This is a hard one to answer, I don't know what personality types fit in well in the other opportunities jobs.)

Why didn't you apply for clerkships or fellowships? (or did you?)

Because I didn't think I'd be qualified for anything in the city where I planned on working after graduation or maybe even in the city where I was living, and didn't want to get stuck in some random place for a year. It's not like an average district court clerkship is a huge resume builder for a corporate lawyer anyway.

what do you mean not qualified? aren't all harvard JDs pretty much qualified for most fellowships and clerkships?

how about a federal clerkship? would you not have been in the running for them?

I think most Harvard JDs can get *a* clerkship. We're not all equally competitive for the popular ones.

District court clerkship = federal clerkship. I would have been competitive for some, but probably not for ones in major cities. I doubt I would have been competitive for an appellate one.

How do you tolerate everyone around here, being one of the few sensible posters on the board? Is a lot of this just entertainment for you?

And do you think you're going to be with boyfriend for the long haul?

BTW, I'm drunk -- I had duckets on UCLA :(

That's why I tolerate it. I like people who are a little weird. It's pretty much all entertainment for me at this point.

Yeah, we're pretty serious.

I don't really get bossed around by investment bankers. I get directions from senior attorneys and from in-house counsel.

If you don't like being at the whim of those who are younger or less educated than you, any service profession is going to be a struggle though.

Do you mean can't count?

In my experience, the young attorneys that are unhappy are the ones who went to law school not really knowing what the hell they were getting into. They knew nothing about the law, had never worked a day in their lives, but the concept of having a 125k job at 25 was appealing. Most people that knew what they are getting into and actually enjoy the law seem to be quite content with their jobs.
