Going to college and law school was a serious, serious mistake. But at the time, how the fuck could I know? Everyone looks down their nose at options like this and would have looked at me like I had two fucking heads if, as a smart guy, I decided to be an electrician. "What, of course that's not what you should do, you should go to college because your smart and follow your dreams and become a millionaire president."

Me too. TBF it's their business ability. If they had that business ability with a law degree, they can probably make more.

A close family member makes absolute bank with his own electrical contracting business but he's the type of guy who walks in the room and everyone likes.

my cousin is a welder. got to journeyman level in two years - splits his time between a private shop and a public agency contract. has no real boss, never has to deal with e-mail or shit at home, never EVER works on a weekend.

makes $90K as a 23 year old in a cheap but nice city. works 35 hours a week and fucks hot chicks because he has a sweet house, nice ride, boat, cash to blow, free time, and laidback attitude.

LOFL at me for going to law school.

guarantee that is not the case. you have to breathe mixed gases at serious depth, which being more difficult and taxing, is where these guys are the most highly paid.

imagine a freezing cold, pitch black, electronically managed environment where one fuckup could lead to a painful, dark death. deep pressure welding is fucking terrible for you and terrifying. those pros get paid up the nose by oil companies because it's an unsustainable career. you would probably be shaken to the core by one trip down a platform - not that you would be able to do it in the first place.

n, but i don't doubt it's difficult. fact remains, it's not something that's out of reach for the ordinary person -- just requires some work and time to learn. from my cousin's description, it's like learning to play an instrument. even with aptitude, you can pick up the nuance and become functional with reasonable effort.

AND they probably pay A LOT less in taxes than you would if you made the same.

On other hand, they probably won't make much more than that.

My buddy and I both made $125k when we started out, me in biglaw and him as a carpenter. Now I make $265k + bonus and he makes the same.

So what? 125k is pretty damn good. Plus there is at least 7 extra years of earning right from the start, and huge debt and interest that eats up your extra earnings. And one of the biggest things is that you had to go through all kinds of stress and mental effort whereas the electrician does something relatively easy on the mind and much more relaxing and enjoyable. Also, do you feel like you are set for life yet in terms of job security or you could still fall off the train at any moment? I've started in midlaw and don't feel secure at all. At the very least, you'll probably take a huge pay cut some time soon.

Most electricians learn their trade in a 4-year apprenticeship. For each year of the program, apprentices must complete at least 144 hours of technical training and 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. In the classroom, apprentices learn electrical theory, blueprint reading, mathematics, electrical code requirements, and safety and first-aid practices. They also may receive specialized training related to soldering, communications, fire alarm systems, and elevators. Because of this comprehensive training, those who complete apprenticeship programs qualify to do both construction and maintenance work.

After completing an apprenticeship program, electricians are considered to be journey workers and may perform duties on their own.

Several groups, including unions and contractor associations, sponsor apprenticeship programs. The basic qualifications to enter an apprenticeship program are as follows:

Minimum age of 18

High school education or equivalent

One year of algebra

Qualifying score on an aptitude test

Drug free

The median annual wage of electricians was $48,250 in May 2010. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $29,400, and the top 10 percent earned more than $80,890.

The starting pay for apprentices usually is between 30 percent and 50 percent of what fully trained electricians make, receiving pay increases as they gain more skill.

Father is a union electrician. He was still an apprentice at 20 and only made like 20/hr. Still good w/o a college education. He had periods of time in my childhood where he was out of work for 6 months-year. Only when I went to college did he find a stable job as an electrician that paid 100K+ and that was through pure luck.

If not flame, 120k/yr at 20 is not typical.

did u think u were after truth or something

its funny that we can say that now but if u didnt go to college and study hard and meet all those intellectuals and all that you would have regretted it

we can say easily you would have regretted it either way

its easy to romanticize that lifestyle and while socializing and working with proles can be fun, if u have a sharp mind you would start to feel trapped and like u weren't fulfilling your potential cause you wouldn't know any better

you just keep making those decisions trying to fix some fault and make it worse, go this way cause it feels right, o wait the other way was better. lost that girl, didnt date that girl, moved away from that place, conformed, didn't conform, blech

If you go out on your own, you can make $100+ easy being an electrician, plumber, whatever, but that's after years of working with blue collar, uneducated, shit heads and sticking your hands in nigger's toilets...

They're still depressed, for all intents and purposes - building has not resumed and many, many of these guys are out of jobs altogether. To act like any Joe 6 Pack can just waltz into these fields and make bank is absolutely fucking ridiculous. The majority of "trained" carpenters are still jobless at this point.
