Saw a guy in the gym on Sunday with his arm in a sling doing one arm deadlifts, that's why I was wondering

IME, this is absolutely wrong. I had exceptionally limited mobility when beginning rehab - I heal pretty fast and had put down more scar tissue than was normal. My doc said there was a possibility that some of those losses would be permanent, and on top of this I developed adhesive capsulitis. 7 months later, I'm at full ROM due to the manual therapy my PT did (forcing it through the range and breaking up scar tissue) and the prescribed exercises.

TLDR: get a PT that knows their shit and they're invaluable; mine is the one that the local NFL team sends their players to, and it's worth every penny.

obviously weak af numbers, but how long out from surgery are you? what's difference in weight between pre-surgery and now?

I had a labrum repair in January and developed adhesive capsulitis, during which I shrank from 170/10%bf pre-surgery to 135 by March. Got cleared to start lifting again in May, and am now 173/11%bf as of last night. Lifting numbers:

- went from benching three plates to 1rm of 135, and now I'm repping with two plates and change. I expect to be back to three within 6 months.

- went from a mediocre squat of 400 to like 225, and am still there due to shoulder range of motion - can't get in a low or high-bar position well.

- went from a five plate deadlift to a two plate deadlift, now back up to 410. Should be back to 500 within 4 months.

All this to say, your time back lifting matters, and you should be able to gain it back really fast. (Disclosure: I'm early 20's, so recovery may be slower for you, but ou should still gain it back comparatively fast if you were strong before.)

10 weeks post op.

i did not do one armed iso exercises before, but I was benching 245 X 5 for three sets. squatting 315 X 5. and standing OHP of 155 X 5.

Isn't the deadlift easy to get back into? I would imagine once your grip is back the shoulder isn't that big a deal.

fortunately my surgey did not cut into the shoulder capsule, just anchored the pec tendon into the humerous.

I should probably get on HGH for 6 months.

Damn, you're getting a faster jump on it than I did. You been cleared to lift by doc?

You should have no problem getting back to those then. I give it 8-10 months. The single arm exercises are particularly good since you're at varying levels of strength in each arm. Keep at that.

It was once I had some ROM back; couldn't even roll shoulders back to lock my back for awhile.

That's extremely fortunate. You should be back to normal much faster than I was.

Eh, if you're gonna hop on gear, make sure you know your shit first. It's less crucial at your age than at mine, but still know your shit.

Earl is in good shape but he isn't a lifting expert, hth.

And more importantly, you don't need a lifting expert. It's always the same formula:

Spend a few weeks getting your basic form down on compound lifts with very light weight (see Rippetoe). Then do sets of said compound lifts (add 1 assistance exercise per compound lift after like.... a year), eat enough (particularly protein). Keep your rep range around 4-6 for a strength focus, 8-12 for hypertrophy (though these are somewhat inseparable and what makes you bigger will make you somewhat stronger, what makes you stronger will make you somewhat bigger, etc.). Lift 3-4 times per week initially, but delay another day if the muscle group you are supposed to train is still sore. That's like 4 things. All the shit about rest periods, complex set/rep schemes, different protein amino acids....doesn't matter at all. Stuff like bands, planks, varying up your form, conjugated periodization....that's stuff you won't have to even think about until you're an advanced lifter.

And one more thing....those guys at the gym you see who are MASSIVE? And I don't mean "big" like a bouncer or something, but like a bodybuilder? All juicing. You can't look like that without roids, no matter what kind of genetics you have. In fact, it's hard enough to even look big and takes some amount of persistence and patience.

this is Jack Delinger. he's super fucking jacked and probably near the tail end of what is achievable naturally for the genetic elite of the population: https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-singer-billie-anthony-meets-mr-universe-jack-delinger-69299912.html

we have some data on this (scroll down): http://gregnuckols.com/2016/12/11/ffmi/

it's highly unlikely he was doing steroids. but despite bodybuilding not being a major sport back then, i have to think he has elite genetics.

i'm not an expert but I can give a noob a better program than all of the retards whose career is "personal trainer" at the gym.

i got nyuug strong as fuck in 6 months and most of all independent from needing help. Unfortunately his brain also broke but that was hopefully unrelated.

fair on all points. wasn't shitting on you, just claiming that you aren't an expert (neither am i) and actually agreeing that you don't NEED an expert to get someone in shape.

personal trainers are fraudlies scam artists trying to make a quick buck and bang some unsatisfied milfs, of course

yeah basically if you can show someone good squat form and yell at them not to fake the squats with quarter reps, you are 90% there.

cr.

btw, i saw you above in the thread talking about grip strength. get a set of these brother: http://www.ironmind.com/product-info/grip-strength-training-tools/captains-of-crush-grippers/

you probably won't need more than the trainer - 2 to start out with (if you can close the 2 initially, you've got a really strong grip. even as a big deadlifter i wouldn't have been able to do that at first). its easy and you can just do this shit at your desk. since you're also working out, should probably try to do it after you do your deadlifts for the day. if you DL once per week, you can probably get away with doing the grippers twice per week (after DL and then once more a few days before).
