fuuuck. this year's oci keeps getting worse.

Kirkland & GDC had listed a 3.4 cutoff, now they want 3.6 - which is close to top 10% (they raised the req. last week on symplicity...at the beginning of the summer cutoff was listed at 3.4)

Bingham raised req. to a 3.5 (from a 3.3)

Orrick and Proskauer pulled out.

Milibank Tweed LA is not interviewing

Pilbsury is not interviewing.

A lot of the NY firms pulled out as well (i.e. Kaye Scholar, etc. and are now only doing resume collections instead of interviews)

Cravath cancelled (not that they were ever going to hire anyone from here anyway)

Additionally, heard from a very reliable source within Fulbright and Jaworski LA who is on the recruiting committee that they were planning to hire 0 summer associates this summer and that I shouldn't waste a bid on their firm.

UPDATE: Davis Polk and Morgan Lewis cancelled as well

Latham says 3.4 required - who knows if they will even be hiring though?

Orrick used to have an LA class size of about 12. Obviously, this year is will probably be zero, since they aren't even interviewing.

You were planning to bid on F&J? Their LA office is tiny. I don't think they usually take more than 1 UCLA summer.

The GPA changes are probably due to ITE, but also reflect the fact that UCLA softened it's curve a few years ago and firms never adjusted their cutoffs to that change.

The VAST majority of LA offices are tiny. Fulbright had 5 summers in 2008.

Most firms in LA have summer class sizes smaller than 10: i.e. Akin, Arnold Porter, Baker, Bryan Cave, Crowell, DLA Piper, Foley, Goodwin Proctor, Hogan, Holland, Howry, Jones Day, Mcguirewoods, etc. etc. etc.

The largest firms in LA were always Kirkland, Latham, GDC, O'Melveney, Irell, etc. But this year all the biggest firms want 3.6.

Latham, OMM, Gibson, PHJW, Irell, Sidley, Milbank, Skadden, Kirkland, Quinn and maybe Munger all have large classes.

Orrick and Pillsbury have in the past, though I assume will not this year.

I guess you're right about F&J. Looks like it's grown since my OCI era.

Why do all of the firms with the largest class sizes have the highest gpa cutoffs for UCLA? Guess they are just the most selective and can get people from T-14's to fill up the classes?

Milibank is not interviewing this year either, btw.

Last year, I took a broad approach and applied to firms that had higer cutoffs than I could meet (as long as they didnt require a cover letter, I mean I am not going to do that extra work for an almost assured auto-ding). I actually ended up with interviews at about half of the firms that had top 10 cutoffs and I was top 20. It worked out alright.

Anyone who has ever dealt with the UC system knows that the regents have their head so far up their ass they can still taste their breakfast. The stattte of CA already has far too many law schools. Now the UC is taking money from UCLA to give UCI a new LS <40 miles away? I work in OC now, and I shudder to think what the prospects will be for UCI grads.

Why couldn't Chemerinsky focus his effors on getting UCLA above GULC? Or transforming Davis or Hastings into good schools and not TTTs. Hell, I would have even been happier if he would have put more efforts into improving USC.

The last thing the over-saturated LA metro area needs is another LS. All it means is that now it will be top 10 at UCLA/UCI/USC for BIGLAW, and top 5 Loyola/Pepperdine. It just makes no damn sense.

yes, that's my point. UCLA is hurt by its location moreso than its non t14 status.

In some ways, I wish that EVERY firm who has no intention of hiring would pull out. No point in going through a charade and wasting everyone's time.

Skadden I believe was 3.3 back in my day. Only firms I remember at 3.6 back then were OMM, Irell and Quinn.

this year OMM is a 3.53...but they probably won't actually make offers to anyone below a 3.6/3.7

It was strange back then than they had the highest "official" gpa requirement of the big-3 because they were the least desirable of the three. Must have come to realize that and revised downwards.

Do they actually hire people just above their cutoff? if they require a 3.53, would they hire someone with a 3.57?

It seems like what they list their official cutoff at is irrelevant...I've heard they only take top 10% regardless of what they list

Dunno. I don't recall anyone being interested in working there. I have a good friend there this summer but she's top-5% I think, so doesn't really indicate what their cutoffs are.

The class of 2011 is analagous to pompeii in 79a.d. just weeks before the explosion of vesuvius. Several weeks before the explosion, there were clear warning signs, such as sulfer in the water and minor tremors in the earth. Many people felt something was wrong, but few could have foreseen the complete carnage and destruction that awaited them.

I know two people from UCLA who are dropping out. they have median grades and know they're screwed. to be fair...they might just be "taking time off" and come back next year. idk, maybe that is a shrewd idea?

except that their loans will not be deferred (bc they wont be in school) and will need to explain the gap year AND there's no guarantee 2012 will be better.

then again, they probably aren't the smartest people to begin with. they ARE attending UCLA, after all.

honestly, no matter what they do they're pretty much screwed. there is no way median at UCLA will get biglaw this year, and probably not next year either. unless they're willing to do government or other small shit law they might as well cut their losses and drop out.
