I need a new laptop. I am hesitant b/c I've heard of them causing problems after 9-10 months and I was told I would need to get an extra $200 warranty. Is this true?

Get the Mac. But also get the warranty. That shit breaks, but they are very good about repairing if you have the warranty. If you don't, you're fucked. Take it from someone who lost his warranty-less Macbook Pro about 17 months after purchase.

They're great, but buy the warranty. Always.

Comes with a 1-year warranty. At any point during that 1-year you can extend to 3 years.

Verify with the sales rep that this is still possible, but it if it is, don't buy it right now. Wait 11.5 months and then shell out.

You can extend 11mos 20dy into the purchase by buying AppleCare at that point.

However, statistically speaking, extended warranties are always a waste. It wouldn't make economical sense for a company to offer extended warranties if they lost money on the deal, and warranties are a zero-sum game.

NO viruses

I never did get the logic behind this argument. If your so worried about viruses why not opt for linux which lies at the end of the spectrum that are OS. When it comes to OS there's only 2 criteria, compatibility(windows) and safety(Linux). Mac lies in the middle of these 2 criteria and as such is worthless imho.

Better to get an Asus UL series laptop that comes with an awesome warranty of the bat and lower cost.

no, i believe it is an option up until original warranty expires. . . but you still only get the benefit of 3 full years, (not 1 year + 3 more)

however,

if you buy multiple items (macbook, ipod, iphone, time capsul) and you purchase applecare at that time, it would apply to all items. If you buy it later, it only applies to the single item you are putting under extended warranty.

cool man, just realize that your experience with dell is limited only to a single model. hell, there's quite a variation of experience between the different latitude users, let alone the different lines, e.g., inspiron, studio xps, precision, etc. i doubt you would be singing that tune if you had an E4300 for example.

that's fine, as long as you're talking about current models. knowing how well a discontinued model worked is irrelevant since dell's quality is not uniform and varies from model to model.

fair criticism, but cheerleading dell's current lineup on the basis of one relatively trouble-free latitude is kind of disingenuous since there are really BAD problems with other dell offerings at the moment.

dell doesn't manufacture its own batteries to the best of my knowledge.

anyway, that would only be a concern if it's a current problem. but something that serious ends up getting recalled immediately.

the OP would be better served to receive recommendations and feedback from users of specific models in question. for instance notebookreview.com forums has threads dedicated just for specific models, so the OP can read about the user experience directly from owners.

Almost everything is manufactured in China these days. Both Lenovo and Apple use the same hard drives, motherboards, etc.

I got a MacBook Pro (cheapest one) three years ago. Before that, I worked with Macs for about a year at a job before LS after being a DOS/Windows guy for my entire life (started using computers when I was 3 years old).

Never fucking looked back; Macs are so much better and worth the $$. There are a lot of extremely minor things that aren't even worth listing but, when summed up, make it a better user experience.

most people think sometime this quarter, most likely in february. there are rumors of macbook pro supplies being constrained, which usually signifies a launch of a new or an updated product, and a small rumor is spreading that they'll be quietly updated tomorrow.

the thing is, most macs are prebuilt before ordering, so users can experience the their new purchase the same day they buy. so if the macbooks pros are refreshed soon, i would wait a week or two and gauge its reception. while this tactic may miss potential long-term problems, short-term issues may be uncovered, and there are enough people who will benchmark it and test it so that you get a good idea of its capabilities and limitations, so it's still worthwhile to wait.

i don't know if the regular macbook will be refreshed soon or later this year. core 2 duo technology has run its course, and it is unlikely it'll stay in the macbook for long.

yes. get the AppleCare warranty, which is $99 for 3 years and covers everything. shit breaks. get a student discount, which if you don't look old is as easy as going down to the local university's bookstore and buying it. understand you're paying extra just to run OS X, but imo it's worth it (others disagree). don't go any higher than the base model, and upgrade the ram after you get it. $50 gets you an extra gig, double the ram (you have to order 2GB, because it comes with two 512mb sticks). simple to pop in.
