What it does is avoid the "why weren't you on a journal" Q and potentially gives you something to talk about. My secondary journal was actually pretty cool and not a huge time commitment.

this is true, which is why secondary journals don't provide the same signal to law firms about capacity to pursue hours of mind numbing work. they usually put out fewer issues, each with fewer articles, and with a less rigorous selection and editing process. end result, much less work.

Takes more gunning to get on LR and its consistently massive work. Gunning for prestige no matter the cost is what biglaw is all about.

shows that in addition to being king of shit mountain that you can undertake even MOAR responsibilities and you want those responsibilities even if the reward is unclear. Signals that you are a decent writer.

If you write a publishable article about an issue relevant to your practice area, it can only help you. A historical survey of substantive due process might be bad, even if - and maybe especially if - it was original and well-executed.

To summarize and expand:

1) Distinction. And as far as law school goes, a fairly legit distinction.

2) Many/most people at good firms were on LR.

3) LR work is relatively close to biglaw work.

#2 is way off. unless you're defining "good firm" very narrowly, as in wlrk, w&c, mto, etc. But if you define "good firm" more broadly, to include, say, kirkland, then "many" is probably an overestimate.

Don't know if this is partly my school, but I find the LR work doesn't usually take me that much time anymore. 10-20 fns per week to check. If I focus and am efficient it's often only 3-4 hours of work.
