yeah, people come and go all the time at secondary journals here at my school... it's usually not an issue and most of your peers won't care. It is, however, an issue if you ran for and got some executive board position that you'd be abandoning, or if you specifically gave a multi-year commitment when you were trying to get on, or if you especially milked the journal to get your job.

this would be such a bitch thing to do. you were hired in part because of the experience of being on journal, and the journal has to be put together and published so that people can continue to reap these benefits. sticking other people with all the work is not the right thing to do when you have derived some benefit from the journal. don't be a dick.

What benefits? Outside LR, the only benefit is a resume line that no one cares about. Students not on LR would be served just as well if the journal never published (not as if employers would have any clue) and they never were required to do any work on it. It is not as if journal work is worthwhile anyway.

Only slightly. Secondary journals do not compete on prestige. They simply signal some base level of work ethic/competence. The most efficient secondary journal, from a student's perspective, would be one that publishes only frequently enough to avoid losing all credibility as a journal and only accepts articles that are exceptionally easy to cite check/edit.

Right, but presumably you want to joint a journal that is treated as such by your school. Needless to say, a journal that doesn't publish isn't going to get funded or appear on your school's website.

People forget that there is more to preparing yourself for professional success than simply appearing as though you have marketable skills. It helps to actually develop them.

What happens when you start at your firm and now you're trying to distinguish yourself from the other dozen people who are starting with you? Hint: your resume won't help. Being a technically competent and efficient editor of legal writing sounds like a good start. As does experience working with teams of people around hard deadlines to produce a final written product.

There is more to journal work, even secondary journal work, than a resume line.

i guarantee that i would not have gotten my job if it weren't for journal. pretty much zero chance. i think it is universally acknowledged that employers value this, at least the flagship law review, as a resume line/experience. this is probably more true of litigators; not sure.

that little qualification completely defeats the purpose of your post. no one's debating that fact. the issue here is what value secondary journals add to the resume. the answer is little or none.

op doesn't say whether it is law review or a secondary journal. in either case, it is a dick move to join an organization, taking a spot someone else could have taken, and then to quit, leaving others to do your work. also, why join if you don't think you are going to derive some benefit?

Law review is a bizarre creature.

First, law students don't know shit about picking good articles from the field.

Second, as a sorting mechanism, it's redundant. Grades tell you just about everything you need to know. If you want a measure of writing ability, just make the writing class graded.

It's only redundant as a sorting mechanism if you think it is a signal of intelligence. People can get good grades by being lucky, or by being smart but lazy. LR membership is generally useful as a signal of ambition/drive/motivation/work ethic as well as the ability to spend long hours doing tedious work.

LR membership might be, but secondary isn't. pro tip at joining a secondary: look at how many articles it publishes and make sure it has a lot of members.

i joined a secondary that publishes one, maybe two articles a year. we do jack shit. it's awesome.

I know many people who could have gotten onto LR, but are not for many reasons. I can understand employers wanting to filter based on those reasons.

I also think that people actually on LR will, by the time they graduate, have more experience coping with extra burdens and tedious work than they otherwise would have. And that's also something employers may want to use as a filter.

This is not a hard question. Did you ever promise the journal you would stay on your 3L year? Did you ever tell your employer or strongly imply that you would stay on your 3L year?

Yes = keep your word

No = quit if you don't want to be on the journal any more.

Here is your answer:

Go to a law firm you'd like to work at and check the profiles of associates and young partners. See what % has only "member of ___ LR" and what % has "____ editor of ____ LR." I'd bet you'll find a lot more of the former than the latter.
