This is an objective rank of undergraduate student quality for 20 schools in California.

It is based on SAT scores, acceptance rate, and the % of students who were in the top 10% of their HS class. If you weight those factors differently you can move the ranking, of course.

1. CalTech

2. Stanford

3. Pomona

4. Harvey Mudd

5. Claremontt McKenna

6. Berkeley

6. USC

8. Scripps

9. UCLA

10. UCSD

11. Occidental

12. Pitzer

13. UCSB

13. UC Irvine

15. UC Davis

16. UC Santa Cruz

17. Cal Poly SLO

17. U of San Diego

19. UC Riverside

20. UC Merced

I didn't look at any other schools. Its likely there are schools I didn't look at that would push UCR and UCM off the list, since they suck.

pomona above harvey mudd? why? the quality of the student body, idk about that. santa cruz above anything? the students at UCSC are mostly retards. SLO has a significantly better student body that all but UCLA and berkeley, though pretty close to UCSD/davis. UCSB is an excellent party school, but the majority of the students there are retards, irvine has a significantly smarter student body, though completely azn and unattractive. also you cant tout the student body at the university of spoiled children for anything.

Pomona and Harvey Mudd are almost identical in SAT scores (Pomona's a couple points better), but HM's acceptance rate is twice as high.

control for size and number of applicants? i think HM has a lot of self-selection. non-smart peeps don't apply, whereas a lot of people apply to pomona anyway.

How would an acceptance rate work when it controls for those things? That's what the 'rate' is.

Anyway, you can drop acceptance rate from consideration and Pomona and HM are basically tied, but Pomona wins by a nose (3 points) on SAT scores.

The average SAT for the middle 50% at USC is 682. At UCLA it's 643. Their acceptance rates and % of class in the top tenth of their high school class are about the same, so USC students > UCLA students by these criteria.

USC: 50% had high school GPA of 3.75 or higher

UCLA: 92% had high school GPA of 3.75 or higher

Anyway, no doubt UCLA has a lot more mediocre students, but it also has a lot more actual top students, professors and departments.

I agree that's important. It's accounted for to a small extent in my formula by the proportion of the class that was in the top tenth of their high school class, but your numbers show that difference more starkly.

This is obviously wrong. Besides the outrageous Claremont Colleges trolling, USC over UCLA is borderline retarded. I know you are pointing to the SAT scores, but you should probably check to see how they collect the data on scores. USC allows applicants to submit their best scores from sections no matter what test date. UCLA requires applicants to use a score from one single test sitting.

Basically, if you're a dumb and study for one section at a time, you can game the system for USC and not UCLA.

LOL @ USC = Berkeley - literally no one in the state of California believes that, and that includes USC grads who are drunk enough to be honest (which given that we're talking about USC is probably most of them, most of the time.)

LOLOL @ USC >> UCLA

LOLOLOL @ the shameless LAC trolling...how was Pomona, faggot?

The top three schools in California are, without a doubt, Stanford/Caltech/Berkeley. The exact order there might be subject to some dispute, but those are HYS and there's no question about it.

You're a fucking retard, HTH

Acceptance rate is a pretty meaningless factor.

Pepperdine's probably somewhere.

It's a proxy for other things like choosing good students based on soft factors.

In my formula, throwing out the acceptance rate makes Stanford fall to 4th place. It doesn't change anything else.

I will check Pepperdine.

Bullshit, you say? Suck on the data:

Santa Clara: 59% accepted, 550-650, 570-680, 550-680, 37%

UCSC: 64% accepted, 510-630, 520-640, 520-630, 96%

My formula gives Santa Clara a score of 648 and UCSC 653. (Compared to 847 for CalTech.)

There's some serious BS going on with that top 10% number. If you look at UCSC:

34% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher

* 34% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74

* 22% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49

* 8% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24

* 2% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99
