it's just a really odd working environment. there are these really weird old support staff people that seem to be suffering from dementia. Most people working at the agency don't strike me as very intelligent and I have, on more than one occasion, pointed out obvious issues/errors that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. I did not expect to do this. Lots of really lazy people. God forbid you need anything done after 4pm. People act sort of unprofessional. People are MIA randomly. People dress really terribly. that's just the basic stuff

Yeah they hire former biglawyers or the best DAs and then don't bother giving them significant support staff. The lack mediocrity pulling them down allows them to stay a decent distance ahead on the government curve.

They talked a lot of shit about how many trials I'd get to do and whatnot. Instead, I sat on my ass all day propounding and answering written discovery, writing settlement memos, drafting inane letters to other government agencies, etc. It was probably less dull than a lot of biglaw jobs, but I was bored out of my mind. Plus I really didn't like DC.

DOJ Honors, not going farther than that.

I didn't hate DC, but I've loved a couple other cities and just didn't get that feel from DC. I'm from the West Coast, went to school on the West Coast, only had a couple friends in DC and none of my good friends were there. Met a couple of cool doods but just never felt like the city was a good fit for me.

Pre-ITE, almost definitely. Even now, decent shot. I only sent out about a half dozen targeted apps. Only one was to biglaw, and I only sent one there because I knew someone in the group who vouched for the non-douchiness of the practice and partners. As I said below, I really don't think I could hack biglaw. I'm in a low COL area making ~100K with good upside. No need to kill myself doing shit work. I'm happy where I'm at.

hmm...i'm at a big firm right now and while i don't hate it, i don't think i'd feel like i had a fulfilling job if i stayed. so i'm thinking about DOJ honors. but your story gives me pause. what kind of person would have enjoyed what you were doing at DOJ?

EDIT: Also, isn't there a 3 year commitment? How did you leave after 2?

You can't do Honors out of biglaw, only straight from ls or clerking. But they hire laterals and there's no difference once you get there, at least on my division.

I think the kind of person who would have enjoyed what I was doing would be most aptly described as a pedantic asshole. But I have a really short attention span, and there were a bunch of good people in my division who had happy careers there.

Some divisions have no commitment. I think some have a 2 year, some have 3 year, and I think one has a 4 year. I'm not going to say which mine was, but it wasn't a big deal. You can apply for a waiver and I won't want to go back anyway, which is really the only penalty for leaving early.

RE pedantic shit - I thought that all DOJ HP positions were litigation?

Is the work substance really that different from litigation in a firm? TYIA

No, it's the the same lit work you'd find in a big firm. It's probably even better. Seriously, it's probably not the work so much as it was me. I have an abnormally low tolerance for bullshit, especially for a lawyer. The agency on whose behalf I litigated was a huge pain in the ass.

I just don't think I like federal civil litigation, not to do exclusively. My practice now is varied in substance and tribunal, and I'm much happier for it even though a lot of the cases I handle are pretty TTT.

I don't think you can go wrong with HP or DOJ in general. Lots of people love it. If nothing else it's a nice resume point and it was good experience... I can run a federal civil case from complaint through SumJ no problem, and I've seen a lot of procedural shit. But they lied through their teeth about getting trial work, and I wasn't the only one who thought so.

Sorry bro, I'm not going to narrow it at all. I *think* some divisions get more trial work, but mine was supposed to be one of those that got a fair amount of trials. At least that's what I heard before I started. I don't know enough about other divisions to comment, however. You really need to find someone works/worked in that division and ask them very specific questions about the number of trials, motions argues, etc., they've done/

You got more if you were there long enough, but I say more in the most relative fashion. Nobody, even the most experienced doods, was doing trials as often as they led me to believe I'd get within the first year or two.

were the ppl there lazy/weird/odd dressers (i.e. as the OP suggests)? I figured DOJ honors would basically be biglaw types and pretty smart, but patriotic-delusional and also seeking a bit more QOL (45hrs a week versus 60+ biglaw). Elaborate on pedantic asshole?

Some of the lifers were a bit odd. I found the HP folks to be fairly well adjusted socially, at least for lawyers with otherwise decent credentials.

Pedantic asshole just = me admitting I'm too ADD to do BIGLITIGATION all day every day. I like my current job because we get some good cases where it's all out litigation warfare that drags on forever, but I also sometimes handle an eviction or a car crash PI case. I just need some action in my practice.

It's just too many fucking documents bro. Fighting to get documents, fighting not to give the other side documents, reviewing a bunch of documents. I think the policy people at my agency were particularly shitty to work with, and because it's government they had no personal stake in the case. There was little or no incentive to think strategically. I'd end up taking stupid ass positions not because they had any merit but because some asswipe didn't want to concede a point on which the agency was clearly wrong.

I fucking love going to state court. If you get a shitty judge it can be murder, but state court is like the wild west... anything goes, and I have found there's a lot more court time and I get to leave my desk a lot more. Mine is not necessarily the life of preftige, but I'm relatively happy.

I definitely go to court more. There's still a shitload of docs and sitting in front of the computer... I mean, I'm still a civil lit lawyer so that's not going away. It' just that there's enough time out of the office, and my practice is much more varied, that I don't go nuts when I have to sit at my desk a couple days straight.

Some of this is private vs. public, but a lot of it is the fit of the firm I'm at. I did some serious homework on the firm I jumped to, knew someone who used to work there and several people who'd litigated against them and knew them well. Still, I mostly just got lucky and found really good bosses with good practices.

I said midlaw, but it's actually fairly small -- about 15 people total. At DOJ my bosses were OK but very busy and I never got a lot of individual attention. Now I work for two partners most of the time and they ask me what kind of shit I want to work on, consult me about the cases they take on, give me the kind of substantive work I like (we have paralegals to handle a lot of the boring shit I hated at DOJ... DOJ had a couple paras too, but they were worthless), and get me into court every now and again. I found a really good place to land.

Hours are bout the same, pay is about the same now with more upside.

FWIW, I don't think I could hack biglaw for very long. From what I've heard I'd either kill myself or, more likely, run amok on the aspie fucks I'd be working for.

As an intern, i hated it. before that, i thought it was what i wanted to do. i just didn't get anything out of it. some of it was superficial - i didn't like how people dressed, i didn't like the cubicle they gave me, i thought nothing looked very nice, etc. but substantively, i did quite a bit of doc review and was in killself mode i was so bored.

now i'm a SA at a firm and i love it. it's a much better fit for me.

some of it superficial like i said. i like having my own office, i like that people look more professional, that the office is nicer, etc. i like getting treated to lunch several times a week.

but i also like the work that i get a lot more. i don't have to hunt down a supervisor to get work, i always get lots of different things to do. at the government, it sometimes took me DAYS to actually find my supervisor and get him to meet with me to talk about something or to get more work. it was horrible. plus, i have done no doc review at the firm which is awesome. i have been able to do work for a variety of different of partners/associates. not all memos, some shorter projects, some bigger projects, etc.

above all else, i like getting paid.

I think you just subconsciously didn't want to be in government and wanted to make a lot more money. If you were at a firm that summer doing the exact same doc review type work, you would be saying now that doc review is boring, but not that bad because it isn't stressful.

Lol, OKAY. I'm at a firm where associates "didn't do doc review." Guess what? If the work comes in and requires doc review YOU WILL DO DOC REVIEW. Partners are going to take whatever work clients give them and staff them any way the clients require. If clients don't want people in India doing first review, it means you're doing it.

Don't assume because you've worked at a law firm for 4 weeks in a cushy SA job that you know what being an associate is like.

my post had nothing to do with what was better, but as a reply:

OP is comparing biggov and midlaw, and is working specifically for a firm that he researched and knew a shitload about before joining (something you don't necessarily even know after a whirlwind 12 weeks at a firm).

then again, I have yet to work in either place and I'm on the biggov track, so take that opinion for what it's worth (ie. nothing). but there are plenty of biglaw horror stories on the board if you want to go looking in that direction too.

yeah but the plus about biglaw is the salary--people expect the work to suck, so are pleasantly surprised if it turns out to be tolerable. the plus about government is supposed to be the hours + the kind of work. if the kind of work sucks, that negates one of the reasons you chose government.

the kind of gov't work isn't monolithic though - sounds like the work didn't necessarily fit the OP and what he wanted to do (trials). I don't think many people go into government work with the expectation of doing a lot of trials (excepting the obvious cases).

EDIT: By OP I meant not SHOCK but the pumo who had a lot more to say about his experiences. You're right that many people are unhappy even with government work.

I'm in BIGGOV. As far as work environment, our office has no contact with anyone outside (except for hearings), so even though we're supposed to be business casual, people slack off a bit in terms of dress.

As far as intelligence, my office is quite big and, with a couple minor exceptions, I've never met anyone who struck me as dumb. Everyone here knows what they're doing.

As far as laziness, there are people who are happy to get by doing the absolute minimum, and there are people who are total superstars.

Personally, I love my job and plan on doing this until I retire.

at my gov internship, i work for a bunch of ex-biglawyers and they're very much the opposite of your typical gov folks. it's all about getting shit done and getting all the details right.

dood, at first i was proofing shit like 8x over and there were still errors i should've caught. i realized you have to proof stuff more like 50 times minimum and try to keep your concentration up the whole time. and these t14 law revie ex biglawyer types rip up my bluebook errors without even consulting the book

i'm in biggov, love it and hated biglaw.

op works for a shitty agency. my agency is conservative, but most of all, very important. we have a few dummies (this was true in biglaw) but the things you complain about make it seem like you've never had a real job before.

complaining about dress? lol. the hours are a ton better, i make a good salary and i'm not expected to work past 6 if i don't want to (but often do b/c i love my job)

You might be correct. I don't have any substantial work experience. Maybe if I experienced biglaw hours I wouldn't care about this stuff.

and like someone posted above, you sound like a fucking aspie.

you should be working hard, doing a good job and making contacts there. that's all you really can do at a place that won't give you an offer.

... too bad they won't hire me. then again, either will the government so this is irrelevant I guess

ENJOY your unjustifiable sense of superiority over your coworkers. Sounds to me like you're right where you belong.

I don't feel superior. Some people I've worked with are great. Besides, even if some of them are terrible, they have jobs and I don't so guess who's pwned. it's all irrelevant because they aren't hiring me anyway.

Why do you feel the need to come to my thread and talk shit? I really don't understand the impulse.

You're talking shit about your coworkers - according to you, many are not very intelligent, lazy, and don't dress well. Then you freak out if someone challenges your own attitude and intelligence? Lack of self-awareness pwned.

You slam people you've worked with for maybe a month, and feel you'd be a better fit in a firm, a place you've never worked in your life. Your ignorance and arrogance are breathtaking.

You're a whiny, entitled twit, and I don't feel sorry for your academic and career misfortune. BIGLAW got it right when it came to you.
