I regret it in the sense that these 3 years are mind numbingly boring, and I feel as though Im wasting my time and just coasting through. Law school is not intellectually stimulating for me, and every class is just drudgery. And its fucking expensive as fuck.

That said, I think Ill enjoy working as an atorney much more than law school, though I dont envision actually practicing law for more than 5 years after graduation.

I shouldnt say I regret it as a whole, I just REALLY wish it was only two years long.

EDIT - Also it introduced me to PR and then this board. Though I suppose law school would have been more boring without the amusement PR and this board offer.

I found a matsters that pays about 70g's starting, (it's a joint degree with the law school). With a JD, I expect I can get at least 80 if I just pass all my classes. I actually still think I'll do better this semester than I did last semester, and I'm not particularly slacking off, but it's nice to have the pressure off. With 70,000 a year, I know I can pay off my loans and be ok.

the concern with you and a million other people in law school, is that you are going to get to a law firm and hate it, not because you hate law and law firms, but really because having a job in general is not that great. Then you will think that law is your problem, when, in reality, having any job is the real problem. You will then leave the law, take some other job, and find out that just having a job was the problem all along.

It has been a HUGE waste of money and a HUGE waste of time. I figured by going to a top 25 school, I'd have decent job prospects. Nope. I'm a 2L and I still haven't found a job. I pay full tuition + living expenses through loans. I sitting at 100k with 50k to go.

I actually haven't decided if I'll go back next year. If all I can get is unpaid work this summer, which is likely, I won't finish. I figure at this point the 100k is a sunk cost. There is no reason to spend the next 50k if there is no benefit. If I do graduate, I'll probably be making 40k working 60+ hours a week.

I should have stuck with being an insurance salesman. Before I started school, I was making 35k a year with plenty of room for advancement. But, o'h well you got to sleep in the bed you made.

What sucks is that I like law school and what I did last summer. If I hated it, being unemployed wouldn't be so insulting.

By the way, my grades were just under the median last semester, so I improved quite a bit. Maybe that will help me get something. I've updated every place I'm waiting to hear from and mass-spammed a ton of firms (with my new grades).

I'm starting to panic.

Worst case senario: you pass the bar before you get a firm job. Maybe you do PI work or something in the interim. Be flexible with regard to pay and location at first, and you will not be unemployed for long.

Good lord, it is really that bad?

Have you only been applying to unrealistic options? Checked out medium firms and/or secondary markets? Public interest work?

Or is it a personality/appearance/interviewing problem?

I just find it so hard to believe that you guys are jobless while Wayne State grads are getting good firm jobs and being named among the Top 10 Lawyers of 2004 (obviously SHE was no AA admit at WS...).

I wouldn't expect to get a job in these outposts unless you're FROM there or have other strong ties to the area.

Perhaps the problem is that you're casting too wide a net. Need to focus and milk your connections.

I go to Columbia. I would suggest you take your ibanking job if you just graduated from college. Law school will always be there and you might like ibanking if you can handle 100 hour work weeks.

Everyone should work for a little before law school. That is one reason a lot of people complain about law jobs. Many law grads have never had a job before so when they hate their law job they assume it is because of the "law" part and not the "job" part. Often they are wrong.

What exactly is so bad about law school? I wish you people would be specific. Is it that it's really boring? That the people are jerks? I think I'm ready for both of those obstacles.

I feel generally the same as the person you've responded to. Law school is nothing bad in and of itself. It is not altogether that boring and the people are not altogether that bad. Regretting it and wishing you were not here are obviously completely subjective personal feelings.

I agree with Rock that I cannot see myself practicing the law. Practicing seems pretty bad and relatively pointless like 90% of the law. That all being said, there are alot of depressed people at law school and they probably show up here and tend to talk more than others...that shouldn't affect you or your excitement for law school. You shouldn't even go in with the idea that the people suck or that it is boring - even if you can handle those things you might be creating the problems more than handling them.

This seems like a measured sentiment, but you said below that you "generally hate it." Can you describe what you hate? Is it that practicing is going to involve long hours and drudge work? And do you feel that's true in all areas of practice?

Ok...

I do not think that it is true of all practice areas and I would hesitate to say that it is true entirely of any one practice area. However, when the loan burden is big it limits the kind of things you can do. Moreover, it does seem like alot of drudge work which is not very interesting.

I am not against law or the study of law just don't really like to do it much myself. I also dislike the teaching method for most courses. There is alot I do not like but it's a good place for people who do like it and want to be lawyers, at most places it's not as competitive as it seems and the people aren't bad as they seem from outside law school. And, of course it you like it you like it and you will never find it boring even if you might find some small part of it boring.

I regret it, i should have just concentrated on marrying a financially stable guy b/c i care more about my relationships with people (friends/so/family) than i do about work. i see it as a necessary evil though to insure my financial stability because i can't count on mom/dad like most people to help me out if times literally get to where i can't pay rent/health insurance/car insurance/bills, etc and i have to be on the streets. but now i just envision myself putting in the hard work just to be financially stable but lonely and miserable b/c all the time i'd put into developing relationships with others is gonna be spent working my ass off, late, on weekends, etc., during my prime years (mid-late 20's). Thhen when i can finally relax a bit i wiill be too old to get going on getting married, having kids, etc.

Well, looks like we do have some common ground after all!

You sum up my feelings exactly. Especially the part about wasting away your prime years, finding later that it's too late to do all the things you wanted.

My mom had me (I'm the oldest) when she was 39. I feel like my older parents had a lot more to offer as parents, but it still bites that I will get about 15-20 years less with them than a lot of my peers.

I'm sorry. I've had a bunch of close calls with my dad...we've been lucky so far though. That's one reason I want to be in the Chicago area, just in case of an emergency.

I do have a serious bf. I'm supposed to be getting married in fact. "Stable" is probably the number one word I'd use to describe my fiance, a major reason that I'm marrying him (perhaps THE reason?). At least then I'll have something/someone to count on.

I don't regret it. Overall, being a law student is definitely easier than holding down a real job.

.

Law school was really shitty 1L year because everything was new, 1Ls are forced to take more credits (and hours of class) than 2L/3Ls and legal writing on top of it all blew. 2L year was also shitty during interviewing season, but school got progressively easier after I got a summer job. The rest of 2L/3L year I managed to have a light schedule including 1-2 days off during the week. In one semester I had 4 day weekends and in another I had wednesdays off.

.

In terms of whether law school was financially worthwhile, I have to give a resounding Yes. As a liberal arts major, any job I would have gotten after college would have barely covered rent, car, and food. My opportunity cost of attending law school was zilch because my post-college earning power was pathetic. Now I'm graduating with $90k in loans (and about $15k in the bank left over from last summer) which basically means I have to pay back a little over ten thou a year for the first decade of my legal career. I am reasonably confident that if I continue to live like a law student for a few more years I'll be on pretty solid financial footing before I even turn 30.

LS is what you make of it. I can't imagine it being harder or more stress inducing than medical school (where in addition to working ridiculous hours you have to be exposed to society's worst). I also wonder how many people have worked BETWEEN undergraduate and law school (like full time jobs, even if it's flipping burgers). The thing you need to realize is that work, for the most part, sucks, any way you slice it. It's something you have to do and get paid to do it. You at least get paid above average in law, and I bet a dime that it would be possible to find a job you liked IN LAW, even if it's not 125k a year.

I'd like to hear from the PhDs, MDs, and other people who have significant academic experience and/or work experience in other fields, how they think the 'standard' job stacks up. So what's being a professor like versus being a gen. practioner versus being a lawyer. Chances are no one will answer this though (although there's a PhD turned lawyer on the grad forum who shed light on the PROs to law over just having the PhD...)

I realized that law is as boring as fuck and that i wanted out of my old job cuz of the people (boss) I worked with. I am in the same field now, but the people have changed and I love it. I am actually happy to get up and go to work each and every day. And I am making pots of money. THIS is living...this is what life if suppose to be about.

I've never posted before but this thread is compelling me to speak out. Work does not suck! I've worked for several years and liked my jobs. Almost all my friends like their jobs to varying degrees. You shouldn't expect to love your job every second, but you don't have to despite it the way many lawyers despise theirs.

If your logic for going to law school is "work sucks, I might as well make a lot for doing it" you need to rethink your decision. That attitude will turn you into one of the miserable biglaw associates who blog about trying to make up for their vacuous lives by thinking about the expensive ties they just bought. I don't get the whole mindset here. I don't understand how smart, educated young grads in one of the richest countries in history can view their work futures so bleakly.

Well, let's see.

Four years ago, I had graduated from a top ten undergrad with a shitty GPA and unpalatable, at best, job options.

Now, after three years at a good-but-not-great law school and OK grades, I am left with the following: (1) no debt (low COL + scholarship + meager savings + slight help from parents + summer $$) (2) a job that will pay me over a hundred a year to basically be a warmed-over clerk and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, (3) three years of dicking around, exploring the subtle differences in taste and intoxication between various Vermont-grown cannabis blends, living a good portion of my twenties skiing and sunbathing and running and hiking, and generally having fun.

Even if I hate my job - absolutely fucking hate BIGLAW, which is possible, maybe probable - I can always parachute out to some bullshit government job that will be easy and eventually pay a hundred a year. That's worst-case.

Or I'll work for ten years, save 25K a year and get another degree or move to another country or do something else - with 300, 400, 500K in my pocket.

So my answer is fuck no do I regret having gone to law school.

The pertinent question always seems to be: What were your other options? I had shit coming in, so yeah, I'm thrilled to be marginally employable. If you had a kickass creative job lined up, then it's possible law school could suck.

That is one of the pertinent questions, but people tend to overestimate their other options and, even more importantly, underestimate the value of having multiple option.

As Matt McDermott succinctly put it: always have a way out.

i don't regret it at all. there are a lot of tools in law school, but i just hang out with the friends i had before.

i was a physics major in college and then worked at a well-known consulting company for a couple of years. but now that i'm in law school i have an offer with one of the very top firms around, which pays significantly more than my pre-LS job. i mean, it's not a bad deal for putting in some minimal effort into prepping for the lsat, and then moderate effort in keeping up with the material for two semesters in school.

working sucks, period, but since i'm not a talented musician or athlete and i detest business types, the law doesn't seem so bad. trust me, most professions cannot offer even the moderately decent pay and moderately intellectual challenge the law does.

I definitely do not. I'm a 1L, so I've only been here for a little over a month, but I think the work is fairly interesting and the people are nice (or at least, the ones that go out are). Also, the academic environment is pretty cushy: you have tons of young people all around you, intellectual opportunities are everywhere, and the work is just not that bad, at least compared to the real world.

There are a few jobs that might have been better. I would have liked being one of the very top political scientists, a la Kissinger or Rice (but definitely not one of the everyday PhD's), or perhaps an editorialist for a major national newspaper, like the NYT. But other than these ridiculously elite jobs, I'd rather be a lawyer/judge/law prof.
