The voice from the laptop was still pouring forth its tale of negligence and duty of care, but the shouting outside had died down a little. The students were turning back to their work. One of them approached with the BARBRI outlines. Winston, sitting in a blissful dream, paid no attention. He was not working unpaid state government any longer. He was back in the classroom, with everything forgiven, his soul white as snow. He was in the dean's office, confessing everything, implicating everybody. He was walking down the white-marble corridor, with the feeling of walking in sunlight, and a human resources rep at his back. The longhoped-for V10 callback was just beginning.
He gazed up at the enormous face. Three years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the pasty white skin that had not seen sunlight for weeks. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved law school.

"My sight is failing," jewdood said finally. "Even when I was young I could not have read what was written there. But it appears to me that that wall looks different. Are the Seven Commandments the same as they used to be, Spackler?"
For once Spackler consented to break his rule, and he read out to her what was written on the wall. There was nothing there now except a single Commandment. It ran:
ALL DOODS ARE EQUAL BUT BOOMERS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS

They were sitting side by side on the carpeted floor. He pulled her closer against him. Her head rested on his shoulder, the pleasant smell of her hair conquering the staleness of the library. She was very young, he thought, she still expected something from life, she did not understand that to ask a jobless 3L about his job search solves nothing.
'Actually it would have made no difference,' he said.
'Then why are you sorry you didn't do it?'
'Only because I prefer a positive to a negative. In this game that we're playing, we can't win. Some kinds of failure are better than other kinds, that's all.'
He felt her shoulders give a wriggle of dissent. She always contradicted him when he said anything of this kind. She would not accept it as a law of nature that the bottom 1/3 is always defeated. In a way she realized that she herself was doomed, that sooner or later ITE would catch her and pwn her, but with another part of her mind she believed that it was somehow possible to inhabit a secret world in which you could poast as you chose. All you needed was luck and cunning and boldness and an internet connection. She did not understand that there was no such thing as happiness, that an upper-middle-class lifestyle lay only in the far future, long after you were destroyed, that from the moment of declaring war on your lot in life it was better to think of yourself as a corpse.
'We are the dead,' he said.

He was already dead, he reflected. It seemed to him that it was only now, when he had begun to be able to formulate his thoughts, that he had taken the decisive step. The consequences of every act are included in the act itself. He wrote:
Lathaming does not entail Dell: lathaming IS Dell.

"I betrayed you," she said baldly.
"I betrayed you," he said.
She gave him another quick look of dislike.
"Sometimes," she said, "they threaten you with something you can't stand up to, can't even think about. And then you say, ‘Don't do it to me, do it to somebody else, do it to So-and-so.’ And perhaps you might pretend, afterwards, that it was only a trick and that you just said it to make them stop and didn't really mean it. But that isn't true. At the time when it happens you do mean it. You think there's no other way of saving yourself, and you're quite ready to save yourself that way. You want it to happen to the other person. You don't give a damn what they suffer. All you care about is yourself."
"All you care about is yourself," he echoed.
"And after that, you don't feel the same towards the other person any longer."
"No," he said, "enjoy DLA Piper."
