I'm guessing the "humanities PhDs are retarded" doesn't apply to black people. They're essentially guaranteed to be hired to a tenure track position at graduation, right?

You should see the bidding wars that erupt around black female economists. i knew one who got a PhD from Harvard and the courting she received was ridiculous.

She wound up taking a position at an ed school eventually.

Not sure if it would've been worth the loan debt, but if you'd gone to a t-14 all you'd have to do would be to publish a paper or two and you'd be all set in academia.

academia would've counted under IBR for 10 year forgiveness anyway so it would've been worth it, but i didn't know about that and i wasn't willing to bet it all on getting set in academia.

Academia is less structured and less compensated than law so you have to enjoy the work and the risk that you might not get tenure and have low savings and fewer opportunities than if you got kicked out as a 5th year associate.

yeah, i hate the academic environment. it's almost as bad as politics. they are always making guarded statements, being politically correct, trying to get other profs and students to cite their papers in trade for favors, generally playing office politics, and pretending to give a shit about things.

Academia scares and depresses me. It can be hard work, over a long period, with a lot of risk because if you arent lucky enough to get tenure you don't have much int he bank to support you as you desperately search for a job. No one really cares about their friends not getting tenure either. It's depressing. I should expect that everyone is on their own but it's still depressing.

Receiving tenure at law schools is much less risky than in other areas of academia, though. It's more of a surprise if you don't receive it.

It's not a question of not caring, but remaining ever conscious that you are just as likely to suffer the same horrible fate, possibly for completely arbitrary reasons.

I looked at alot of schools for Economics major and out of about 50 top schools with Economics majors I saw one single black female economist. Maybe two or three black male economists.
