SF Bay Area.

Approved up to a 400,000 loan, FHA, so we'd only have to put down 3.5%.

When we tallied up ALL the monthly costs - mortgage, PMI, taxes, HOA (can't afford a single family at this price range), renting would still be vastly cheaper for similar places (even with tax benefits taken into account).

Good decision?

then trying to buy a shitbox makes especially little sense I'd think, maybe ever, unless you really want to retire in SF

how can building equity be a scam? i'm assuming that the npv of homebuying is at least equal to renting for thirty years and having nothing to show for it, which seems likely (though not guaranteed and not obvious from the op's situation).

Just build equity is over little breh.

Home prices are still inflated. Boomers want to cash in on their historic outrageous highs and leave you holding the bag.

Theres no more money in houses. Find a different scam

i would agree that home prices are still inflated. i see what you're saying. why is the market still tolerating this inflation? why not just short everybody's house?

In most of the country, buying is a no-brainer. In SF, you probably made the right move

The Bay Area never had a "bottom" because it wasn't hit as hard by the Great Recession due to tech, and now it's getting crazy here. It's like 1999 models and bottles.

Maybe I'll wait for the next bust (which may never come though)
