I assumed Yale would be far and away the best forestry program in the country, given its legacy. I guess not?

Could it be that Yale students tend to hold out for government/academia positions, while students in other programs are more inclined to take more readily-available industry positions?

It's not like they couldn't move into government positions after working in industry.

As for the academia thing, it wouldn't be the first time ph.d students grasp fruitlessly at non-existent tenure-track positions.

could also be a difference in % masters vs phd students enrolled; I think Yale Forestry's PhD program is pretty substantial

I think of the type who would go to Yale Forestry; can't imagine them wanting to cut down any trees so industry is probably anathema compared to people in more professional-oriented programs

This is unique to the US, mostly. Colonists etc. did a ton of clearcutting for farmland; as farming has become more and more concentrated and imports have increased, more farmland has returned to its original forested nature. Old growth forests are still rapidly declining, though.

Global forest cover is still declining.

LOL! No. Even quants from top-ranked PhD programs struggle to land these types of jobs. No hedge fund is going to hire someone with a fucking forestry PhD.
