Reviewing some resumes for an open position now. Looking at resumes from the other side has made some things clear:

-Amazing that there are still some college grads who have resumes that are more than one page. These go automatically in the trash.

-Less is more. These resumes packed with every fraternity/sorority committee you served on, with details about each, is not only unnecessary; it makes you look silly.

-LOL at people who have GPAs with three numbers after the decimal. No one is impressed by your 3.744.

Other thoughts?

your points 1 and 3 are lol

if you have publications, you have more than one page.

if your school measures GPAs to three decimals, you are required to present them as such

is this why you appear to work in HR?

These aren't CVs for academic jobs (or even research jobs), bro. These are resumes for a tech job (at a company you've heard of).

lol at "you are required" to present them as such. This is most definitely not true. I'm pretty sure my UG (like any UG) gave me a GPA to three decimals on my transcript, but no one with any sense puts that on a resume - looks tacky and amateurish. One decimal is credited.

Don't work in HR; this is my first exposure to this (filtering some resumes for a higher-up for a selective position requiring certain specific skills).

I know this is typically viewed as a creative practice, but having a personal web page of your bio, a photo, your resume, and other accomplishments/articles you've (co)authored etc. could be useful for networking.

Yeah, you're right. I haven't had my coffee -- really, what I'm trying to get it as that having a personal website shows a certain kind of sophistication and you have more control over it, thus being able to brand yourself a little better. Perhaps I'm just in marketing so I am thinking like a marketing person.

it's paid actually and they should be concerned because we got close to 300 applicants for one position.

it was for a qunat position too, so it's not like we were dealing with all polisci majors.

Greetings,

As a clerk, we got 700 for 1 position. 100% in PDF.

As GC of a company now, I help with recruiting. Probably 70% of our resumes (IT industry) are PDF.

Word can actually fuck up your formatting from one version to another. The point of PDF was to know for a fact yours will look exactly the same on every computer.

It doesn't make a difference as long as your formatting doesn't get fucked up. This is precisely the reason PDFs were created in the first place.

Fair enough, but "seemed fine" =/= "exactly as it appears on the sender's computer"

if your name googles to blog calling you a racist, stalker, etc try heading your resume with a shortened name or a nickname. Not only might this save you from embarrassment, but it'll help with any perceived rigidness, and it'll make a recruiter question less your aspieness.

Shocking number of people don't tab or use tables, they try to align shit by hitting the space bar 50 times.

I ask for pdf resumes in job postings, and dipshits still send word docs. Ding, because we send a lot of files to clients and other firms we work with, and sending word docs is extremely clownish. If you don't have the time or the ability to convert your resume to pdf, you'd suck in this job anyway.
