Pittsburgh
- Overall nice city
- Good urban character/density with gorgeous old mansions
- City is built upon beautiful green rolling hills
- Large population of smart educated folks due to multiple universities
- Limited crime (the ghettos are small and isolated)

hard to sprawl over mountains.
There are also weird rural-feeling places inside the city that pre-date postware suburban sprawl

Kansas city:
- beautiful, walkable downtown (the plaza) and underrated architecture
- second most fountains of any city in the world
-fantastic BBQ, jazz
- ridiculously friendly people
- cheap as fuck COL

Baltimore
- Good music scene (Animal Collective, Beach House, Wye Oak). Good arts due to MICA
- Part of the DC combined statistical area but COL is about 1/2 of DC's.
- Credited city neighborhoods like Fells Point, Canton, Mt. Vernon, Hampden
- People really are much less pretentious and striverish than other east coast cities. You can go to a bar and strike up a conversation with anyone from a doctor to a auto body worker and it isn't unusual.
- Camden Yards
- Crime is overstated. Most homicides/shootings are due to drug gang turf wars which are relatively self-contained (at least for people not living in the ghetto).

as I've mentioned before - Toledo, Ohio.
-Mud Hens AAA baseball, which is supported fanatically by the locals
-a compact little downtown and some pleasant walkable neighborhoods around the city with bars and restaurants
-a national-level art museum and other institutions built up during the industrial glory days
-a nice-enough location on a river with plenty of parks in the area, and close to lake erie itself
-lots of old brick industrial-era architecture that looks neat nowadays
-cost of living and housing is insanely cheap.
-plenty of countryside and farms nearby if you want to try and be a "locavore," along with enough hipsters to give the city some of the usual hipster food/beer amenities that people seem to like these days
-a central location, in a way. an hour north: detroit. two hours west: fort wayne. 2 hours east: cleveland. 2½ hours south: columbus or dayton. the 3 to 4hr drive belt includes pittsburgh, cincinnati, indianapolis, chicago, grand rapids, and gets you most of the way to toronto.
downsides: crime; race riots; population decline and general malaise.

AAA baseball is TTT
Incredibly unsophisticated, prolish population which cannot be undervalued.
Unlike everything else in the Midwest, it's positioned in such a place that it requires much longer commutes to interesting areas. Even Ann Arbor is really 45-60 minutes away. If you're in South Bend or something, at least you have Indy + Chicago. Toledo's closet real city is Detroit... everything else is really far.
Boring as shit. There is absolutely no industry there.
The Art Museum is boss. The river front is cool.

I'm not sure that it's "unheralded" because it's a consensus great little city, but I'm not sure enough people have taken the time to visit. Great weather, food, people, art scene. And it's so pretty. Lots of natural attractions nearby.

-for less than a MFH shoebox you can get a 3br oceanfront apt and have a reasonable commute to downtown. It's one of the few cities out there that where you can work a professional job, live at the beach and not have it be crazy expensive.
-tons of hot dumb UNF chicks that all go to bars within blocks of your oceanfront apt mentioned above.
-some cool scenery nearby & historic areas, (e.g. amelia island, south ponte vedra, st augustine)
-FL/GA weekend is a ton of fun
-literally every chain restaurant and fast food chain you can imagine

"Centrally located (in state)"
it takes forever to get anywhere from bend. youre not gonna be hopping in the car to go to portland or the coast all the time when it take 3.5 hours to get to either. in practice, eugene is really the centrally located oregon city.
that said, bend is 180

tcr. gorgeous setting (green as fuck, thickly forested with tall trees covered in spanish moss), extensive upper middle-class population (basically the entire north side of town up to the georgia border) with sensibly-developed subdivisions on acerage as opposed to tiny lots, super clean air off the gulf of mexico with no polluting industry anywhere near, 60 inches of rain a year with daily summer thunderstorms and seabreezes keeps it cooler than most places in the southeast, excellent infrastructure with wide, landscaped boulevards, highest level of education of any city in Florida, etc.
plenty of things to do (credited classical music performing arts since FSU has one of the best music schools in the country - pop into free professors' chamber music or doctoral recitals that are held almost daily), good selection of food (some of the best pizza i've had anywhere is at momo's, kool beanz cafe, cypress, and sage are awesome, kitcho has 180 sushi because all of it is super-fresh from the gulf and their seafood supplier is literally next door), amazing ecotourism (swimming in wakulla springs, canoeing the st. marks or wassica rivers, sailing at shell point), two of the best undeveloped beaches in the u.s. are a two-hour drive )st. george and st. joseph's peninsula), pretty awesome to be so close to the deep south without actually being the deep south because you can pop on up to thomasville, ga and have a 180, straight-from-the-farm southern buffet at the market diner restaurant.
