Cite your shitty senior thesis if needed.

Mine are not particularly controversial picks:

1. Huckleberry Finn

2. Moby Dick

3. The Sound and the Fury

won't dispute that #1 and #2 deserve mention, however I think the great american novel is Adventures of Augie March. Also Henry Miller basically shaped the future of American lit w/ Tropic of Cancer. fuck the haters.

Of course but I just don't think of James as an American author because his books don't take place here anymore than I consider Eliot an American poet.

I think the Golden Bowl or Portrait of a Lady might crack the top 3. Hell, if we consider Nabokov an American we might have to throw in Lolita or Pale Fire.

These really are quintessential "American" novels due to their themes and they're also incredibly well-written. Good choices.

I can't argue the top picks based on their epic/meaningful nature, but this thread reminds me that I need to dig deeper into American authors because I've mostly read British/Euro/Latin American novels.

Moby Dick and Huckleberry Finn are the two obvious choices. After that it's debatable. I'm inclined to vote for Grapes of Wrath personally, but there are plenty of other solid choices on this thread.

surprised to see so many sound and fury trolls itt. I think it's the least impressive of faulkner's 4 great novels, and certainly the most derivative of Joyce.

Picking Absalom over SATF is preftigious, but probably misguided.

Other than Faulkner, I'd say Moby Dick and Huck Finn, like everyone else in this thread. The more interesting question is what 20th century novels make these kinds of lists in 50 years, when Huck Finn and possibly Faulkner fall out of favor when the 19th century South has less of a hold on the American literary imagination. I'd guess that Grapes of Wrath takes its rightful place as an all-time American classic. Wouldn't be surprised to see something by McCarthy (probably The Road or Blood Meridian) see more mentions on these lists. I think Pynchon has had his moment already but who knows.

Also, haters gonna hate, but Beloved probably deserves some mention ITT.

the three i can think of: huckleberry finn, the sun also rises, a farewell to arms.

i consider faulkner to be pretentious joyce-like garbage. the great gatsby is nothing special. moby dick is so amazingly awful i couldn't get through more than half of it. novels in general suck.

Very credited, though I would submit that there's nothing like the experience of reading a truly great novel (however rare they may be, especially in the post-modern age). Gatsby may be overrated by people who haven't read anything else, but even being fairly well read, I can't name many books that live up to the hype as Gatsby does. No matter the backlash against Fitzgerald, his depictions of the futility yet necessity of striving are perfect. If it was good enough for Hunter Thompson to copy, it's good enough for me.
