Is it ever not appropriate to wear cufflinks? Is there an officially credited brand of cufflink that signifies a baseline level of quality and/or prestige?

As to playful cufflinks, I personally find them repugnant, especially with business attire. They look like a lady's costume jewelry. Avoid them. If you must, wear them only to social events when you're wearing a suit - not in business.
When is it not appropriate to wear cufflinks? Almost always. You should only wear them with a suit. Some people have taken to wearing double cuffed shirts with blazers and, worse, sport coats. This doesn't work. Cufflinks 'dress up' an outfit while a blazer or sport coat is a way of dressing down. They shouldn't be done together.
Officially credited brand? No. Cufflinks are increasingly seldom seen. A classic engine-turned set of links from, say, brooks brothers or a monogrammed set of such ones from tiffany would be pretty standard. Longmire is seen as perhaps the best and most prestigious brand out there - they have some sets that will cost you as much as a small car. |
