I asked him what my end game is here because the firm hasn't made anyone partner in the la office infour years, there are several 11nth + year associates at the firm ahead of me in the queue and all I do now is just write briefs and motions-zero case management, zero discovery, zero trial, 100% full aspie shut in sitting on westlaw in my office all day long.

I am not gonna stand out as a the top brief guy if I go to Palo alto firm. But i enjoy that rep now here. So partner said my best bet is, stick it out here, bill 2k a year, and carve out a niche as the brief writing guru, and I can try and snag of counsel here.

Otherwise go to the more

prestigious firm, do appellate or whatever, not stand out and not make partner and be another homeless ex biglaw associate in a few years scraping by at some shut boutique.

Partner also said everyone has low hours this year, and just try to get to 1600 or so.

Thoughts????

Because more prestige is new pressure and other smart associates to compete against. I already quit a prestigious firm to go to current firm because I had a problem coping with the high expectations.

Because I don't feel appreciated enough at current firm, I am not challenged to do my best work, there is no dedicated appellate practice here, I am not learning how to run cases or do what senior associates are supposed to know how to do, the main partner I work for is not a rainmaker and I have my doubts he can continue to support me long term, this of counsel firm brief writer thing i am suspicious how feasible it is, more prestigious firm presumably gives me better shot at Ausa or in house, and at least I will be learning stuff.

To be fair, as I typed out all those reasons I thought to myself, these don't seem very compelling for the risk I am taking of giving up a very easy $250k job.

I would work for very smart partners on more complex appeals, I feel like my writing etc would improve. And the office said if I want to take on a blended role and do commercial lit so I relearn those skills, they will let me.

Greetings,

So you're 35 and strongly considering coasting without improving your skills or expanding your work experience until retirement? Sounds like you're sort of dead already.

GC friend of mine once told me: you should change your job when you stop learning new things.

i was at a pressure cooker law firm before with high expectations and hated life. at least at my new firm, i am not miserable. no all nighters, very few late nights, the work is easy and usually stress free. "not miserable" is often best people can say about a biglaw firm life

you realize if you want to learn how to run cases u are going to have to step outside your beta writing-only comfort zone, right? have you taken any depos and shit? could you do that? would you even want to? plus a lot more client contact, etc etc.

The first thing you need to do is start broadening your sources of work at your current firm. How long have you been there? Someone's got to be busy. Find out who and offer your services.

managing partner of lit in our office has work by default -- other offices call him when they need l.a. counsel -- but a junior associate told me the partner said he would never give me work because he views me as the bitch associate of the other partner, and that I would never prioritize his work over my partner's.

so the managing partner of your office doesn't even respect you? you obviously have no future at this firm and you're definitely not going to be made of counsel. if you aren't going to take the palo alto job, you should at least look for something else. how difficult is it to find another litigation associate position in l.a.?

the managing partner doesn't really run any of his own cases and just divvies them out to his pet associates. Unfortunately I am not one of them and I am not sure if I can be. He has no serious power at the firm anymore despite the title, and cannot really make or break anyone's career here anymore, but yeah, with him not liking me, of counsel is even less likely.

Now that I have thought about it more, I care less about securing of counsel and more about just maximizing my time in biglaw so I make as much money as possible.

Well, maybe if you talk to him (or someone else) yourself, you can convince them that you really do want some work and will work hard on it.

Obviously, if you get it, you need to do a good, fast job.

I had a convo like this w/ my Judge the other day.

Before she took the bench she was a Partner at a BIGLAW firm in the nearby BIG CITY of our jurisdiction.

In our current city her old firm has a satelittle office so she still keeps in touch w/ the people there.

She was telling me of a particular associate there who she thinks fondly of and has been there for 7 years. Unfortunately, she said that he has a snowball's chance in hell at making partnership b/c all he does is write briefs for Partners in the D.C. office.

She was telling me as a cautionary tale how important it is to always develop new skills for my career and not count on my current job to take care of me.

I say all that to say that YOU ARE FUCKT if you stay there in "HOAP" of making Of Counsel and becoming the "go to" guy for briefs.

Shit, they could easily go to local counsel for that shit or just hire a small firm that does appellate work to handle their brief writing.

LOOK OUT FOR YOUR OWN CAREER, it doesn't sound like that Partner will do it for you.

Trial work is declining for major commercial litigations. Litigation at big firms is moving towards the specialization of tasks. I don't see anything wrong with concentrating on brief writing and research. Brief writing is incredibly important especially considering that this is how most opposing counsel, clients, and judges develop their opinion of a particular lawyer or firm.

not sure why you are considering PA. first off, LOLFL at an associate not feeling appreciated. seriously man, you're just pretty ok at a specific thing that is completely useless outside of a very specific context, and don't forget they could replace you with ease. you're a white collar drone - nobody is ever going to seriously 'appreciate' you, so grow the fuck up. you're an employee, not a special person who they should give more than a passing shit about.

second, you already missed the bus for becoming some kind of biglaw 'player' who is running cases or making deals. you are a self-admitted asptard who is more comfortable sitting around alone all day. you're not suddenly going to manifest the personality and skill set that would make you successful in other roles, and your superiors probably realized you weren't cut out for it long ago.

work at your current place for 5-6 more years, save a lot, then jump ship to somewhere shittier but with less hours. spend your 40s traveling a lot, raising the kids, and otherwise generally having a life. release your striver anxiety and just feel grateful that you didn't wash out in 3 years like so many, in which case you would not only have much less money to sit on, but you would have been forced into a market where your beta personality and lack of personal ability would have been put on display.

Ok, but I may not have 5-6 years. As others have mentioned, because of my low billables and dependency on one service partner, i am at risk of being fired. 12-18 months is a more likely scenario. The other firm gives me probably at least an additional six months of biglaw pay on top of that.

Yeah. Upgrade to a new job son. You have enough in savings (I'm assuming) to take a bit of long term risk. Your new job would give you an extension of security. Either way you'll get booted, but with the new one you have a couple of extra months...plus the ability to acquire new skills, and perhaps maybe a contact/client or two.
