I'm looking for a car for my wife that I will have to drive on occasion. You guys shot down the idea of a Prius (thanks). What do you think of the 2012 Passat?

At this point, any of the popular four seaters are solid buys:

Toyota Camry

Honda Accord (wait for a new one)

Nissan Altima (wait a few months for the new one)

Ford Fusion (wait a few months for the new one)

Chevy Malibu

Hyundai Sonata

Kia Optima

VW Passat

If you have desire to drive even a remotely fun car, avoid the Camry. Don't be dissuaded by Kia and Hyundai's former reputations.

No car is more boring than the Camry. Camrys are cars for people who don't give a shit about cars.

No I'm not gay. Prius sucks balls - I was just looking for something cheaper but long term.

my dad drove a passat for most of the last decade. no idea what newer models are like but for whatever reason it was the most maintenance/repair needy vehicle he's ever driven. think he regretted it.

2012 Motor Trend Car of the Year. As car awards go, this is one of the most preftigiouf.

Seems to have better interior styling than past years. Overall look is a little sedate for my taste, especially compared to that cool looking 2013 Fusion, which is a very similar car.

I've had two Volkswagens over the years and they constantly needed repair work. The headlights would burn out, the wipers broke, and the climate control stopped working after a few months. I was always at the dealership filling out paperwork. I drive a Honda these days and haven't had any problems.

You have to look at the reliability rating in Consumer Reports. VWs don't have a good reputation for reliability. It's too bad because they could be an appealing alternative to the Japanese cars.

An article I remembered from Time mag. I remembered the "grim faces" of VW owners who had to take their car back to the dealer too many times.

Don't buy a German car except as conspicuous consumption to show how much you can afford for repairs.
