ut it? I hate the expectations that come with it at work and the stupid reactions I get among friends of friends or at parties.

Yeah. I try to avoid ever offering where I work, etc. I'm pretty sure my cousin thinks that I'm some paralegal. When I was clerking he thought I was some file clerk. I just let him go with it.

It sucks. I hate hw prestige obsessed this profession is. It turns good people into elitist pricks at times.

Yeah. Same with the flip side. People who went to "less prestigious" schools or who have "less prestigious" careers often have hangups about it, develop napoleon complex, etc. It's really sad. I don't know why it is so prevalent in law but almost completely absent in other intellectual careers like engineering. It definitely doesn't reflect well on the types of people lawyers are.

when i landed my fed coa clerkship i was in fucking tears i was so excited. my fiance asked why i was so excited to be a judges secretary, was annoyed that i only found a "temporary" job, and was appauled that she made twice as much as i would make as a clerk.

my wife was same way. she got all pissy that she had been supporting us for 3 yrs and i was supposed to finally get paid and then chose some temporary "clerk" job. she actually thought i had "given up" or something and wanted a chill job. this is how almost every lay person views it too. it's impossible to convince them otherwise.

There is nothing prestigious about law to people who are not dumb enough to be in law

i would agree law isnt prestigious now that i know what lawyers do. i think the same applies to finance. but i think that being in biglaw gives me at least a top 5% lifestyle. i saw a bunch of my middle school bros the other day, and i doubt more than 2 or 3 of them make over 60k.

actually i think it's the opposite. for the most part lay people still find law to be prestigious, whereas lawyers themselves don't

didnt say they did. we still live top 5% lifestyles. my buddies that studied civil engineering (that are way smarter than almost any atty i know) are getting killed right now. one dude called me today and tome me his salary was just reduced to 50K - after doing it for 8 years. 250k beats the shit out of that
