I go to this Starbucks in my home town daily to work on my online SEO side biz. These guys are all friends, joke around all the time, have a great attitude and seem care free. I'm sure it varies greatly by store/location tho

yeah bro same at mine, i think a lot of it has to do with the coworkers, at mine theyre all pretty about 22-25 and chill. there a couple who look like they don't want to be there (give me shit about asking for whip in my coffee) but the other pull them up, whereas if they had shitty coworkers they'd be worse

Same at mine. They're all friendly and relaxed with eachother. I guess starbucks pay isn't too bad and the schedules are flexible.

In most locales Starbucks can be selective enough in hiring that they get a cheerful good crew that has a good time together and with the customers. There are quite a few worse jobs - cooking shit food, janitor, cab driver, etc. They can reject the people who wind up with those jobs.

Glaring exception: subpar locations in moderately nice NYC locations. Starbucks needs a ton of employees and has to compete with a lot of employers or even better managed stores in their own empire. As a result, many stores wind up staffed strictly by aging proles with bad attitudes - none of the hopeful young art students and fresh-faced aspiring actors.

bro you make excellent points, one minor thing i wanted to point out - a cab driver in the right city can make like 200 a shift, and 300-400 per on weekends

There's no way any cabbie, even in MFH, is making $200 on a typical weekday shift unless he owns medallion and cab (serious capital investment). Sure he grosses $200+, but a huge chunk is going back out the door to lease the car. Lots of days down around $100 after expenses are more likely. $200 is a very good day.

Also: We are talking 12 hour shifts for cabbies. Even if they made $200, that is $17/hour. If you are not totally inept, you will make $10/hour at SBUX, plus (shitty) employee benefits. When you consider that the cabbie is driving all over NY hustling all night and could go home with much less if shit doesn't go well, plus doesn't have employee benefits and is facing tax and negligence liability as an independent contractor, the possibility of a pay bump doesn't look so hot. That's why cabbies are ugly old immigrant guys and baristas are cute young people with good attitudes.
