On the back end of dental school and the gf is moving up in about 12 months when senior year starts. I should have substantially more free time by then, and she should be using some of her grace period not to work, so a puppy is within reason. Any advise on which breeds would be best as a starter dog? What age? Already house broken? Thanks in advance.

I've had purebread dogs growing up and have had multiple rescues as an adult. I can confidently say you're way too focused on breed. Your best bet is to go to a large, reputable rescue organization. If you're in a big city, just try to find out what the largest one is. Be completely up front with them about your lifestyle (how much room you have, how much you can legitimately devote to walking it, whether you'll have small kids in the future) and let them match you with the appropriate dog. A good rescue org will have tested the dogs temperament and be able to tell you whether the dog will be a good match. If you're getting an adult dog, which it sounds like you should, the actual dog is much more important than the breed, which isn't going to tell you everything you need to know. You could end up with a lab that is hyperactive and horrible with kids, while a pitbull mix might be calm and great with kids. Good luck dude.

this is great. We'll be in a medium sized city and Ive been researching some shelters/rescues. I've had quite a few friends steer me in this direction as well. Thanks dude.

No worries man. Good luck. You're doing a good thing getting a rescue, too. A bigger rescue org is a safe bet because the last thing they want is to take the dog in, work with it, and then send it to a home, only to have it come back to them because it wasnt a good fit, and then have to send the dog to yet another new home.

One word of caution is that some apartments might not take certain breeds, so just be sure to look into that if you're getting a pit bull, rotweiller or breed that some large apartments will term "dangerous." Usually, its not a big deal because most rescues are "mixes" so they don't fall into one of those categories cleanly, anyway.

pitbulls are pretty cr for this actually. you can get a sense of whether you enjoy having a dog.

if you are willing to put in the training time, it can be an ok animal, but if it becomes too much to bear you can bring it to a shelter and no one really cares

This is right. I've seen quite a few people take them as first time dogs and do quite well. They're pretty resilient and forgiving. They tend to be very energetic though (though not as bad as jrts, beagles, etc.). But around where I live they are probably the most common non-toy dog.

I recently got a shiba inu for my first dog. My dog is a huge pain in the ass and a massive sociopath, but he's totally worth it.

The downsides:

-If I don't keep him crated whenever he's not in my direct line of sight, he destroys something. Like, he chews holes in the walls.

-He's a bigger attention whore than me. He'll wake up in the middle of the night barking an wailing until I pay attention to him. He doesn't need to eat or go out - he just wants someone to look at him.

-We've finally mastered "sit" and "stay," but he's very hard to train. I'll teach him to do something, but then he'll refuse to do it unless there's a treat in it for him.

The good:

-Looks like a fox. Gets lots of attention.

-Doesn't shed, doesn't piss or poop in my apartment, doesn't bark, is calm around other dogs.

-Approaches attractive women at random and is sociable with them. More effective than any wingman I've yet encountered. Has paid for himself already.

Rescuing an adult lab or golden (4+yo) are both solid choices. You get a dog that's already through the horrible puppy stage, which is when they're the most difficult to handle.
